The Department of Students Welfare (DSW) Central University of Kashmir Saturday organized a special lecture on “Healthcare Issues Concerning Youth,” by Prof (Dr) Muhammad Ashraf Ganaie, Professor Endocrinology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi.
The programme was inaugurated by CUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mehraj ud Din Mir.
Welcoming the guests, Dr Fayaz Ahmad Nika, Dean Students Welfare highlighted the relevance of the programme in view of transition of society from simple life to modern one, a CUK statement said this evening.
In his inaugural address, the Vice-chancellor stressed upon the need for better healthcare management by the individuals and the State keeping in view the changing lifestyle and food habits of the youth. He appreciated the Department of Students Welfare for the concern shown to ensure better physique of the students of the university in particular and the youth in general.
In his technical address Prof Muhammad Ashraf Ganaie divulged that diabetes is more prevalent in Kashmir as much as it is in India and other Asian countries. “India is called Diabetic Capital of the world.”
He revealed that Diabetes bill of India is likely to be three times the national budget. Dr Ganaie stressed the need to sensitize the masses in view of the fact that we are making immature social interventions to build our brand image in the society. He warned that there are no food safety measures, appropriate healthcare system though Kashmiri people are used to high salt intake that lead to high produce of hypertension which in turn causes strokes (paralysis) and heart attacks.
The resource person said that all lifestyle diseases like diabetes mellitus, obesity, fatty liver metabolic syndrome and PCOS abide by common soil hypothesis. “We need to off-set the effects of these by proper exercising pattern and proper diet management.” He also stated that the stressful conditions under which we live here has a bearing on our health and can be a reason for various disorders.
Dr Ganaie advised the students to be medium of change and be part of geometrical progression in providing right information to the common people.
A team of doctors and members of the faculty were present on the occasion. At the end the Dean Students Welfare thanked the guest for his illuminating lecture which he termed as an eye-opener for one and all living in this part of the world. The programme was anchored by Dr Ihsan-u-Reheem Malik.
