On Wednesday the Army and police had claimed to have killed three militants in an encounter at Lawapora area of Srinagar.

The three slain have been identified as Ajaz Ahmed Ganai and Athar Mushtaq Wani of Pulwama and Zubair Ahmed Lone of Shopian.

Army said they had tracked the militants on the basis of intelligence inputs, adding that the latter “fired indiscriminately” and even lobbed grenades at the forces.

“For past many days, intelligence inputs were pouring in continuously about the movement of militants on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway. Yesterday (Tuesday), we developed leads and came to know that militants are hiding in a house right opposite to Noora hospital at Lawaypora in HMT area,” said General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the counter-insurgency Kilo Force, H.S. Sahi.

The families of slain have disputed the account of an army that the three were militants and claimed they had no links with any militant groups.

The majority of the shops are shut in Srinagar and twin south Kashmir districts Pulwama and Shopian while the thin movement of traffic is on the roads.

Meanwhile, mobile Internet services remained snapped on the third consecutive day in Pulwama and Shopian.

46 Top Commanders Among 225 Militants Killed In 2020: DGP Dilbag Singh

SRINAGAR: Terming the year-2020 as a year of confidence for the security forces, J&K Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh Thursday said that in the year about say good-bye witnessed over 100 anti-militancy operations were conducted that saw the killing of 225 militants including 46 top commanders of various outfits.

He said at present, almost all the militant outfits are facing “leadership crisis” while there are a few commanders who are on the radar of police and security forces and will be “tracked down soon.”

Addressing an annual press conference in Jammu, the DGP Singh said that the year 2020 was a year of confidence for the police and other security forces due to many positive things that happened.

“We conducted 103 anti-militancy operations in J&K in the year 2020 of which 90 were witnessed in Kashmir and 13 in Jammu. 225 militants were killed in these operations of which 207 were killed in Kashmir and 18 in Jammu. The slain include 46 top commanders of various militant outfits who were either of A++ or A+ category,” the DGP said as per news agency KNO. He said that all the militant outfits are leaderless while a few militant commanders are surviving, who are on police and security forces’ radar and will be tracked soon.

The DGP Singh said year 2020 saw an increase in the local militant recruitment compared to last year. “But it is less than year 2018. The important thing is that 70 percent of those who joined militancy got either killed or were arrested. 46 militants were arrested after joining militancy while 76 newly recruited militants got killed in various anti-militancy operations,” he said. “The shelf-life of militants is very less. It is between three days to three months only.”

In 2020, 38 civilians including political activists were killed compared to 38 last year. “Most of these killings took place when the election process was started,” the J&K Police chief said.

The J&K DGP said that year 2020 saw highest ever ceasefire violations along the LoC in UT. “This was used as tool by our neighbour to push in militants into this side. However, every ceasefire violation got a befitting reply by our security forces,” he said. The year bidding adieu to us saw less infiltration compared to past few years and that’s why the “our neighbor focus on raising the local militant recruitment and choose aerial route to drop weapons, drugs and cash.” “Drones were used along the LoC to drop cash, weapons, and even drugs to promote militancy,” the DGP said. “We have been able to foil the majority of the attempts that were aimed at dropping weapon consignments through drones.”

The DGP said that 36 militant modules were bused in 2020 while as 100 people associated with these modules who were tasked to provide logistic support, shifting of weapons from one place to another, grenade lobbing etc, were arrested.

In 2020, there was a significant improvement on the law and order front as the year saw the lowest level of law and order related incidents. “There has been 75 dip in the law and order related incidents this year as only 143 incidents of law and order (with less intensity) were witnessed in Kashmir compared to 584 last year,” the DGP said. “There was zero causality in the law and order incidents in the year 2020. Last year two people had died in the protests just because of their over excitement.” He said in year 2020, there was almost zero collateral damage barring a single incident at Batamaloo area of Srinagar where a woman got killed in crossfire during an encounter.

The DGP said that 12 militants surrendered in year 2020 during live encounters, for the first time. “Even yesterday at Lawaypora encounter, one boy tried to surrender, but his associates fired and he couldn’t come out,” the J&K Police chief said.

The J&K police chief said that Covid-19 pandemic emerged as a bi challenge for the police in 2020. “Despite less preparedness, police took an active part in serving the people in different ways. Fifteen policemen lost their lives due to Covid and they will be remembered as Covid martyrs while 3500 got infected with the virus. At present, there are not more than 50 to60 policemen who are in positive state of virus,” he said.

The J&K police chief said that 152 quintals of Heroine was seized in various raids in the UT while as 35 persons were booked under PSA. “Huge quantity of charas, intoxicating capsules and bottles were also seized,” he said. The DGP said that in total 26889 cases related to various crimes were registered in J&K of which 13000 were reported in Jammu and equal number in Kashmir.

The J&K Police chief said that in year 2020, Rs 77 crore were spent on different police welfare schemes and at present there is not a single application pending in Police headquarters.

“The DDC polls coupled with BDC and ULB elections, were the largest ever democratic exercise conducted in J&K’s history. Efforts were made to disrupt the polls by sending groups from across. One such group was eliminated in Nagrota and another in Poshana. Six grenades were lobbed in Kashmir, but the exercise was completed in a peaceful manner,” he said.

Srinagar Gunfight: Masoodi Demands Impartial Probe, Asks Govt To Clear Ambiguities

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Member of Parliament from Anantnag Justice (retd) Hassnain Masoodi on Thursday sought an impartial investigation into the Hokarsar killings and impressed on the government to clear the ambiguities leading to the killing of three youth.

Masoodi while demanding an impartial probe into the killings said the stated version of the police was far from convincing and ambiguous. “The police version is not convincing and clear-cut; it is an admitted case of police that none of the three youth in their early twenties were in the militant list; two of the youth are admitted not to have been involved in militant activities and said to be OGWs. In the case of a third boy who is twenty years old, it is said that he ‘might have joined militant ranks’. The statement joined together is far from convincing and lends support to the version of families of the slain trio that they were innocent and not involved in any militant activity,” he said.

He asked the govt to recall the Shopian killing and subsequent findings that those killed were innocent and had come all the way from Rajouri to earn livelihoods and continue their studies. He demanded thorough investigation into the issue and return of bodies of slain youth to their families so that their last rites are observed by their families at their respective places.

Masoodi said the matter warrants time-bound inquiry as the versions of the family and the police are contradictory. “The version of the family in wake of the ambiguous version of police seems to be nearer to the truth. Therefore it becomes imperative upon the government to come clean on the matter. In previous Shopian killings, the boys were found innocent. I express my deep sympathies and unison with the bereaved families and pray forbearance to them in their hour of grief,” he said.

Masoodi also spoke to Principal Secretary Home Shaleen Kabra home and demanded a probe into the matter. He will take up the matter with LG J&K Manoj Sinha and Advisor Home to LG RR Bhatnagar.

How 2020’s New Paradigms Shall Remain As The New Norm In Future?

by Asad Mirza

Let’s hope that in 2021, the aftermath of the pandemic will lessen and our politicians and rulers will find new more humane practices to rule.

CRPF personnel stand guard on the deserted business street in Maisuma locality of Srinagar, on Saturday, August 1, 2020. Authorities ordered the closure of all major religious places, including mosques and shrines in Kashmir, to contain the spread of Coronavirus. Kashmir has extended lockdown until August 5, 2020. KL Image: Bilal Bahadur

Perhaps the humans have awaited no other year’s end so eagerly across the world as that of 2020. Similarly, no other event in recent history has had such a far-reaching impact as that of the coronavirus pandemic, on the world and its inhabitants.

The year 2020 had so many time-tested patterns and living styles changed and set many new paradigms, affecting virtually every sphere of our living, that it could be easily termed as the harbinger of a new living style.

A new style of living and working

2020 taught us how we could maintain a safe distance from each other and yet pursue our daily routine easily. This included working from home, learning at home and even socialising at home: all through the net access. The pandemic forced us to have a limited number of guests at weddings and other family functions. It also resulted in a realisation that how much we are spending on unproductive and uncalled for activities. Instead, if we have so much extra, then we could easily share it with the needy and the poor.

The lockdown forced commercial organisations to adopt new techniques and work styles adhering to the social distancing and other safety measures. Work from home (WFH) became the norm and companies realised that instead of spending so much on their infrastructure maintenance, employee transportation costs and meetings and conferences and exhibitions, novel ways could be found to still achieve the results. It also resulted in the better mental health of the employees as they didn’t had to bear the daily toll of commute and instead could devote more time to productive activity.

Pristine Nature

Just like a two-sided coin, Corona too brought unprecedented alarm and panic, besides immediate countermeasures to manage it across the world. It also forced us to pause for a while and think about how we are managing our affairs with nature.

While the news about Coronavirus’s devastation continued during 2020, along with the resulting worldwide lockdown, some positive stories about the natural changes also started appearing, which certainly brought a smile to our faces. Paradoxical as it may sound, but it could be surmised that Corona might be a timely wellness programme for our environment and planet earth and even us.

There were reports from several European countries of better air, clean atmosphere, sparkling water in canals and rivers, birds and animals appearing at places where they have not been seen for a while. In Wuhan, where the outbreak initially began back in December ‘19, the sky, which is usually home to dangerous air pollution levels, has turned natural blue. The change has been attributed to travel bans and the pause in factory work.

Similarly in India, there were reports of a cleaner Ganga in Kanpur and Varanasi-two cities where it is the most polluted, a cleaner Yamuna in Delhi, residents of foothill cities in Punjab were able to see the majestic Himalayan mountain ranges from their rooftops besides birds chirping and animals wandering into human habitats at night in foothill towns.

Self-healing

While nature gave time to mother earth to heal, it also gave humans a break from their busy daily routine, to allocate not just some time, but full time to self. This happened at physical, mental and spiritual levels.

What we fail to realise is that perhaps nature gave us this time, to take a break from our daily humdrum and ponder over those issues, for which we earlier never used to find the time.

Mentally or spiritually, the lockdown gave us enough time to ponder over those spiritual issues about which we always wanted to read and study in-depth but were never able to focus on. Now we were able to ponder over questions related to our existence, our role and duties as a human being, and what we are getting and giving back to society.

In most cases, these spiritual pursuits involved family too. We had more time to interact with and take guidance from our elders and transfer it to our kids and clarify their doubts about our faith. All this helped us to establish a stronger bond with our elders, youngsters and kids; besides also providing them with an opportunity to grow spiritually or study matters related to their faith. And the end result was a healthy and stronger family both physically and spiritually.

In addition, the pandemic also forced many to adopt healthy habits. Surveys carried out in many European nations reveal that a vast percentage of people are now in favour of travelling by cycle or walk for their daily commute to the office, instead of using public transport.

Similarly, the “stay at or near home” culture has led to a boom in online shopping and home deliveries is likely to stay, with 58% of shoppers in the UK determined to continue their support to local groceries and food stores.

Human Migration

The lockdown and its aftermath also showed us pictures which left the whole nation and the world aghast – the pictures of a vast multitude of ordinary Indians fleeing the large metropolises, in particular Delhi, leading to many unanswered questions about the shape in which our country has transformed into.

This photograph that appeared in Jammu based newspaper Daily Excelsior shows a group of workers from Rajouri and Poonch trekking the snow clad Mughal Road to reach home from Srinagar. Since the main highway was closed by the lockdown, they preferred trekking the 80 km distance on foot on March 31. More than 90 persons undertook the risky travel to reach home in late March 2020.

The ordinary Indian citizen was forced to ponder why these migrant and poor labourers and their families decided to flee the cities? As the end result of an announcement which put the whole country into an unexpected lockdown, without any background preparation on how to manage the emerging chaos resulting out of it, or it was due to our collective apathy towards those who are less fortunate than us.

However, the exodus also bought the indomitable and collective spirit of the Indians to the fore. Many social organisations and individuals rising to the challenge, started community kitchens, helping those who were stranded or those were not able to get two square meals a day.

Cleanliness in 2020

In addition, the pandemic and its deadly effects also brought new words like quarantine, lockdown, sanitisation etc. into the lexicon of every common Indian. People, who had no regard for their own cleanliness, awoke to the harsh realities and started practising what the government was trying very hard to instil in them through its ‘Swatch Bharat’ campaign.

Pandemics don’t always trigger social unrest, but sometimes they can, by throwing into question the very inequalities that caused them. That’s because they hit the poor hardest – those in low-paid or unstable employment, who live in crowded accommodation, have underlying health issues, and for them, healthcare is always less affordable or less accessible. This was true in the past and remains so today.

In reality, Corona also challenged the basic foundation of both the capitalist and socialist worlds. Any easy answer, to the resultant chaos and apathy, would be a bit difficult to find, but it may force our politicians and policymakers to re-strategies the priorities and solutions, adopting a more humane approach. Though that also seems much fanciful to desire.

Let’s hope that in 2021, the aftermath of the pandemic will lessen and our politicians and rulers will find new more humane practices to rule.

Shishur To Vahrat, Kashmir’s Alternative Calendar

by Khalid Bashir Gura

SRINAGAR: As Jammu and Kashmir Bank’s famed wall calendars will not don the cold household walls this year, a group of Kashmiris have come up with ‘Kath Bath’, a possible alternative calendar canvassing Kashmir’s six seasons in a creatively rib-tickling manner.

Cover page of Kath Bath calendar

While flipping its minty-fresh pages, it dips you in nostalgia and makes you forget why you came into it in the first place.

One may be searching for holidays or festivals in it but seeing the sights, scenes and stories, one would love to plunge in the calendar to live all the six seasons.

The cover photo of the calendar depicts the symbolic representations of Kashmiri’s beauty, landscape, tradition, lifestyle, art, culture, music, and on top of it a symbolic floating Shikara on the waters of the Dal Lake.

The calendar draws inspiration from the ‘Six Seasons of Kashmir’: Shishur, Sonth, Grishm, Vahrat, Harud, Vandeh mentioned in the book, THE VALLEY OF KASHMIR, by Walter R Lawerence.

The calendar follows the timeline associated with each of these seasons. The calendar characterizes each season by way of illustrations depicting Kashmiri household traditions and relatable life activities.

As cold wave has gripped the Valley with temperatures plummeting below the freezing point, life too seems frozen as people are layered in thick clothes and mostly remain indoors.

Shishur Season

The time frame from January 15 to March 15 has been categorized as Shishur Season in the calendar. This has been depicted as the coldest season of the year. The temperature could go below minus 10 degrees Celsius. Anyone who looks at the comic illustrations of this season’s page will recall the past, present, and future experiences related to this season. The illustration of the chilly season is heart-warming and leaves one with smiles, memories, and nostalgia that any Kashmiri can relate with.

Everyone would break a smile when memorable moments of life slip on a hardened pack of snow followed by a burst of laughter from a friend.

The calendar with its comic depictions displays the passion and love for cricket in the Valley. It showcases how people continue to play cricket even when it is freezing outside. A creative new playground has been displayed in which the game is being played on thick ice sheets.

The life of Dal dwellers amid frozen winter waters is depicted along with their art of moving ahead in life despite tumultuous and vulnerable ground. The thrusting oar in frozen waters is depicted with the passage of the Shikara and its driver towards the shore to live everyday life.

The calendar also entails the joy of flinging snowballs at loved ones, friends, and learning the art of making a snowman with charcoal eyes. The snowman has been turned topsy- turvy in the calendar.

The stacks of winter clothing especially socks, skull caps, and cloaks are also part of the calendar.  The childhood memories of elders shrouding children in their Pherans along with how kids used to pop out little heads as mushrooms has also been depicted in the calendar. The mischievous behavior of children with icicles, the snow burial of friends, the silence of snow; the thud of it when it falls on the ground, the back-breaking shoveling of snow are all presented in comic illustrations depicting Shishur season.

The calendar also showcases experiences of the harshest wintertime, Chilai Kalan, (December 21 to January 30) its progeny—Chilai Khord and Chillai Bache—along with the pleasure of witnessing the snowfall from a window. The older people are seen enjoying the warmth of electric blankets which, however, is a rare thing in Kashmir as electricity is not available most of the time in winters.

The scene of people watching television with usual winter news of “Highway closed” donning the screens is also showcased by the calendar along with the scenes of snow falling from wires, and rooftops; to water bottles being filled with hot water.

All these moments depicted in the calendar makes it difficult to flip the Shishur season page but with change being the law of nature, one moves forward to the season of Sonth.

Sonth

Sonth, the spring season spans from March 15- May 15. The season in the calendar, as in real life, heralds a moderate climate with refreshing air and plenty of green vegetation everywhere.

The calendar shows the opening of long shut windows to let fresh spring air come in. Life shows signs of resurrection. The enclosed and seemingly inactive life begins to bloom in this month as life flips its wings and the air, water, and earth grows warm.

The green buds are shown shooting up on bare branches with tepid sun regaining strength as days go by. The people are seen taking off thick winter clothes, and rattle cupboards for clothes for this season. The hibernating creatures living on and within the earth begin to appear and move around the fresh green grass in the calendar. People are seen rushing to gardens, orchards, fields to plant saplings. The thrilled children are seen snatching moments to play in the blooming season. The cold winter season gradually makes way for the spring with cool mornings and evenings and warm days in the calendar.

The colours of sky, land, and water are seen changing slowly. The winter greyness is replaced with green earth and blue sky. The snow on the mountains shines and starts melting.

As spring passes, the all-inviting summer dawns with days becoming longer and nights shorter.

Grishum

The calendar has the season of Grishum which spans from May-15 to July 15. This season captures life in Kashmir at the zenith of its activity and bloom in the calendar. The buds are shown to be now blooming. The grass is green now. Trees are drooping with green. The cool brooks rush amid green pastures, fields, and orchards. The insects, birds, and animals are frolicsome. Picturesque spots are thronging with families and schools shown organising picnics while tourists and trekkers start their journeys. The Dal Lake is reflecting the surrounding mountains in its greywater. The calendar shows the Lake is thronged by bobbing, sailing, and silent Shikaras in the backdrop of dazzling lined up houseboats. The swimmers and tourists along with boats full of vegetables grown in floating gardens of Dal Lake are also showcased in the calendar. Summer in the calendar is marked by people tying nuptial knots.

As the temperatures go up, the summers are marked by wind and rain rattling the window panes, swinging trees, and slanting silver rain in the calendar. However, rain is only followed by sharp glittering sun.

The Grishum, in the calendar gradually paves the way for the much hotter phase of the summer season.

Vahrat

Vahrat in summers span from July 15 to September 15 and is marked as the season of frequent rains and high temperature up to 35 degrees in the calendar.

This season is depicted with fruit trees drooping lazily along with green trees still in the summer heat, sun becoming blistering hot and people seeking cool shadows and refrigerated products. The fan blades are shown slicing humid hot air within people lazily beginning to droop and sleep with rising temperatures.

The doors of refrigerators are frequently knocked while the ice-cream and soft drink spots are being consumed in tons. The watermelons are omnipresent everywhere in the Vahrat as are the people at picnic spots of the Valley. Hilly areas with lower temperatures are thronged more by the people from the plains while dips in brooks and lakes become temporary escapes from the intense summer heat. The calendar also presents rushing rains with parched earth being filled with life.

With rain marking the end of summer, the temperatures start to go down in the Valley and the calendar presents the onset of autumn.

Harud

Harud (Autumn) season is marked by the fall of leaves from trees which the Sonth (Spring) had brought. It is the fall season of the Valley. The days are shown becoming shorter and colder with temperature losing its capacity to resurrect. The sun is tepid again. As Harud grows, the calendar presents the harvesting season. All green turns yellow. Fruits are harvested. The golden drooping rice fields are thrashed as the yellow sun stares through crimson turned Chinar trees. People are seen stockpiling for winters. The cupboard doors are again knocked to bring out warmer clothes. The change in season is marked by a few sneezes, coughs, and colds. The living creatures on earth prepare to leave till the dawn of Sonth. This season is also marked by marriages, festivals.

As the last leaf falls, the winters resurrect itself from the long slumber.

Vandu

Rubbing its eyes the new season called Vandu ( Winter) is listed from November 15 to May 15 in the calendar. The trees are bare and brown with the water turning cold and the wind becoming icy cold. All forms of life start to enclose within four walls in the calendar. The days are presented to be shorter and nights longer.

The daily activities turn indoors as people switch on heating appliances along with wrapping windows and doors with polythene and blankets.

The season is marked by electricity outages. The presence of candlelight dinners (not the replica of the first world) due to electricity cut off is common in winters. The traditional Hamams are the source of warmth in privileged households while the traditional fire pot (Kangri) becomes a companion of humble people throughout the winter. People’s flexibility in adapting to changing contours of life in this season is reflected in the calendar. The ice-cream shops, frequented in summers, are transformed into winter garment shops.

As the icy cold wind makes outdoor activities difficult, the oldies and young are seen hibernating in warm rooms. The evenings are marked by storytelling sessions of grandparents along with children involved in their winter homework. The clothes on the body are added like the wood and charcoal in the Hamams and Kangris.

The panicky yet memorable moment in winters is the presumed accidental kicking of the Kangri which doesn’t just give goosebumps but also makes hearts skip a beat.

However, if one actually kicks a real Kangri, the wintry world turns upside down with everyone rushing in chaos and confusion to doze of a possible fire and save a precious item from getting ruined.

The calendar’s cover photo of a boat features various characters. A young girl and a woman (probably a mother and a daughter) are seen on the roof of a yellow coloured Shikara with tea or kehwa brewing in a Samovar nearby. This presents a beautiful stretch of imagination and an escapade from the humdrum of conventional daily life scenes.

Also, like the classic Titanic movie; a boy and girl enjoy the breeze as leaves of all seasons swirl around them. A butterfly oversees the inhabitants of the roof, probably; a girl greets her or wants to chase her. The imagination is left for the beholder. A boy is also seen struggling to swim while a girl, swift as fish, is seen effortlessly splashing water around her swims. A young man and woman are seen singing some musical notes in the air too. A woman in traditional attire with Tumbaknari is singing, and a Pheran clad boy is playing the guitar, which seems to present a blend of tradition and modernity.

Inches away, a kid is seen offering a spring leaf to a lake while he is being stared by a Sikh man popping out of lotus flower. This illustration is rib-tickling. On the edge of the boat, a man in a traditional Kashmiri skull cap is clicking photos. Click! Click! Opposite him, a boy is playing with a rope while his legs are crawling on the poles of the roof. An apple is staring endlessly alongside Kashmir’s blooming green leafy Haakh (Collard). Two red cherries dangle silently amid the orange drapes of the boat.  But someone in the illustration seems oblivious to all the happening: A boy sleeping in the boat!

“With an aim to support and honour all the wonderful and talented girls of beloved Kashmir,” Samina Masoodi and Shafat Qazi and Funkar International USA have sponsored the Kath Bath 2021 calendar.

Srinagar Gunfight: Have No Reason To Dispute GoC Kilo Force’s Version, Will Still Investigate Families’ Claim, Says DGP Dilbag Singh

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh Thursday said that he has no reason to dispute what a senior army official has stated about Lawaypora encounter in which three “militants were killed”, but added that police will “still investigate the claims made by families of slain trio.”

“I have no reason to dispute what the GoC Kilo Force (H S Sahi) has stated about the Lawaypora encounter. The families of two slain youth claimed that their children had gone to submit forms at a University, I want to ask them what were their children doing at encounter site if they had gone to submit a form,” DGP Singh said in reply to a query during a press conference at Jammu, as per news agency KNO. GoC Sahi while addressing the media yesterday had stated that the slain trio had plans to carry out a big strike on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway and that they turned down repeated surrender offers.

He said that at times families, especially parents of the children are not aware about the activities of their wards. “We will still investigate allegations levelled by the families’. If there is anything, we will probe that,” he said. Asked families of slain trio had stated that their wards were students not militants and that police too admitted that slain trio were not listed as militants, the DGP said: “It is not important that every militant is listed with the police. When a person leaves his home to join, he doesn’t tell his parents.”

Pertinently, three youth Aijaz Ahmed Ganai, Ather Mushtaq, and Zubair Ahmed were killed in an encounter at Lawaypora, near Hokerser on Srinagar outskirts yesterday. Soon after their killing, their families staged a protest outside Police Control Room (PCR) Srinagar stating that their “wards were not militants but students.” The families had urged J&K LG Manoj Sinha to probe the encounter at the highest level.
