‘Kerosene Smell’ Emanates from a Spring in South Kashmir, ‘Water Supply Snapped’

On finding “Kerosene smell” in a Spring that supplies water to Bongam Lowermunda in South Kashmir, the PHE has appealed people to not use water for the drinking purposes.

On Wednesday, a team from PHE led by Executive Engineer Qazigund, R K Pandita met Additional DC Islamabad, and discussed this matter with him.

“We requested Additional DC to provide us help from different departments so that we can find the cause of plenty discharge of detrimental substance in Bongam Spring. We were assured that Geology and Mining department in addition to health department will be directed to visit the spot for examination,” said Pandita.

The matter came into the limelight after people of the village, found Kerosene like smell in the drinking water that is being supplied from the Spring.

After survey by the PHE team, lift of drinking water was stopped and now tankers have been deployed for supply of drinking water to the areas concerned.

“We appeal people of Bongam Lowermunda to refrain from using water from this Spring for drinking purposes at least for 15 days,” said Executive Engineer PHE Qazigund.

According to the Officials in the PHE, immediate cause was not known, and “will be only revealed after proper testing is conducted”.
