Independent MLAs hold Key in RS Polls

KL Report

SRINAGAR

With election for four Rajya Sabha seats for Jammu and Kashmir approaching, both Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) are trying their best to woo seven MLAs of smaller parties and independents who hold the key to the success of both the parties, sources told KNS.

“If PDP gets support of two independent MLAs and BJP, National Conference and Congress all decide to go alone, it will be advantage PDP. Similarly, if BJP manages support of four independent MLAs and rest of the three parties contest alone without getting support of independents, it will be advantage BJP,” they said.

“In case NC and Congress enter into an alliance they need support of at least two more independents to be at advantageous position. However, in this scenario BJP and PDP should be contesting alone and without the support of independents,” they added.

A senior official from Law Department told KNS that which party or alliance will have the higher number of MLAs will be at advantage.

“In case all the parties decide to go alone, whichever party gets one more vote than the other will be at advantage as in that case there won’t be requirement for 29 MLAs for two seats and 44 for other two seats,” he said.

Sources said both PDP and BJP wants to go alone in the RS polls as in that scenario with the help of two to four independent MLAs they can win three seats. “Both the parties are trying their best to woo independents as they hold the key,” they said.

CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Kulgam M Y Tarigami when contacted said he was ready to support any party or combination minus BJP.
