In the cross border/LoC firing, a BSF fuel depot in Poonch’s Soujian sector was destroyed last night while at least four soldiers of Indian army were wounded in the heavy cross-border mortar shelling in Mendhar tehsil of the same district.
“Several mortar shells landed near forward Indian army posts in Balnoi Sona Gali in which four soldiers of Mahar regiment were injured,” reports said.
The cross-border shelling ignited a huge blaze that burnt the fuel depot to ashes along with nearly 20 adjoining shops.
The cross border shelling witnessed an apparent increase after India army said that it “carried surgical strikes along Line of Control in Kashmir on September 29”.
Johny William, the deputy inspector-general of police, Rajouri-Poonch range, said, “Pakistani troops opened fire on Indian positions during which the depot was hit.” “The depot caught fire as a result of which some 20 shops, which were ramshackle structures, were gutted.”
The depot was used to supply fuel to the forward posts of security forces stationed along the LoC.
Earlier, thousands of people have been evacuated from border villages in Jammu following the increase in ceasefire violations.
Chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday called for a de-escalation in tension, saying the people of Jammu and Kashmir had been the worst victims of the hostilities and the confrontation in the region.
“Hundreds of families have to migrate from border areas of the state and they suffer immense hardship because of the prevailing tense situation in the region,” she told Narendra Modi in Delhi.
