A team of Dukhtaran-e-Millat visited the home of Rubeena Akhtar, who was burnt by her in laws, at Dangerpora Kanipora, a statement issued by the outfit said.

Rubeena was set on fire by her in-laws at Namlabal area of Pampore. The team met her brother and sister.

The team was told that Rubeena was married to Adil of Namlabal Pampore last year in September. She was time and again harassed by her in-laws and was told that she had not carried dowry with her. Rubeena would be beaten by her husband, father in law and mother in law, the statement alleged.

Rubeena’s brother told the team, “Her father and mother in law had gone on Hajj and had brought a wand from there. She was beaten with that wand many times. Her Husband would force her to ask her mother and brother to get different things for him. Rubeena was a practicing Muslim and had to suffer for that as well. Her in-laws would scold her for offering prayers and would tell her that she should utilize the prayer time in household work.”

Rubeena’s brother and sister who are witness to the incident of setting her on fire said that Rubeena had called them a few minutes before the incident and told them that she is being tortured. “Rubeena told us that her in-laws are hatching a conspiracy to kill her. When we reached the spot she was up in flames. It was only because of us she is still alive, though she has suffered 60% burn injuries.”
