Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said in New Delhi that women are the safest in Kashmir.
“Of all the places in the country, girls and women are the safest in Kashmir. They cannot be raped in a moving car. They move around in Shikaras and houseboats,” Mehbooba Mufti said at a tourism event.
However, the function took ugly turn when an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) minister walked out of the function.
The AAP minister Kapil Mishra asked Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister to clarify her position on Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, whose killing triggered mass protest in Valley.
Kapil began his speech by asking Mufti if she considers “Burhan Wani a terrorist or not”.
“Terrorism & tourism can’t go together. We can fight Pakistan, but how do we fight with people who give shelter to terrorists in J&K? It can’t be that you don’t accept Burhan Wani as a terrorist and then expect tourism to increase,” Mishra said adding, “Mufti must tell if she considers Afzal Guru a terrorist or not.”
Chaos prevailed after Mishra’s comment as the organisers of the event interrupted the AAP minister and urged him not to use the space for politics. However, Aam Aadmi Party has distanced itself from the actions and statement of Mishra.
Mishra left the venue, saying he “does not want to share the dais” with her after he was forced to stop his address following strong protests from some in the audience and officials accompanying Mufti.
However, when Mufti’s turn came to speak, she embarrassed Mishra by highlighting the issue of crime against women in the national capital.
“Compared to any place in the world, including Delhi, women and girls are safest; there is no fear of getting raped in a car,” said Mufti.
