The unabated encroachment coupled with illegal excavation of priced Kareva soil favourable for the growth of Saffron in parts of Pampore town is threatening to push the Saffron production to its death bed.

Sources told Kashmir Life that mafia with unfair liaison with officials is facilitating the illegal excavation of soil, rendering the land infertile for the growth of Valley’s coveted crop.

The excavation is reportedly going on with impunity in areas like Chandhara, Namblabal, Wuyan, Hathiwara and Lethpora.

“The mafia is violating Section 133 of Land Revenue Act and this has been happening right under the nose of concerned officials,” sources alleged.

They said the over the last few years soil spreading over 100 kanals have been excavated and if the current trend continues, there would be no land to grow Saffron in the next decade.

Officials who spoke to Kashmir Life denied familiarity with the issue but vowed action against the culprits.
