While terming the hue and cry over the release of senior pro-freedom leader Masrat Alam Bhat as ‘meaningless and unwanted’, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani Monday said release is exactly according to the law and constitution and the “people who oppose this order, are actually rejecting their own judiciary and this attitude is undemocratic and immoral also.”
While demanding the release of all other political prisoners of Kashmir, Geelani in a statement said, “All those people who are in jails in connection with the Kashmir dispute are all political prisoners and none of them is criminal and they are the real representatives of the wishes, aspirations and sacrifices of the Kashmiri people.”
While interacting with the media persons who came to his New Delhi residence, Geelani said that the Masrat is purely a political leader and he was imprisoned against the high court orders. “The high court issued his release orders 17 times during the last 4and ½ years but police as usual throw these orders into the dustbin and continued with their arrogant policies. This was a issue of grave human rights violations so if he was released now, then it is not any favour to him and there is no justification in making hue and cry out of this,” he said.
While demanding impartial investigation into the 2010 killings and registration of FIRs against the police and CRPF personnel and then head of the Unified Command Mr. Omer Abdullah “who were directly involved into the murder of the innocent students,” the Hurriyat (G) chairman said, “The mass agitation of 2010 was the reaction of the Machil fake encounter and the killing of Zahid Farooq, Wamiq Farooq, Inayatullah and Tufail Mattoo like innocent students and the people came out on the roads and peacefully protested against the innocent killings but the police and CRPF personals fired indiscriminately on the peaceful protesters with the result about 220 more youths were martyred.”
He said that holding the Masrat responsible for the killings is like “the thief turns the tables” and it reflects the moral degradation of the people who by using such false propagandas are only scoring their political points.
In an answer to the question on the newly formed BJP supported Mufti led government in the state, Geelani said, “The political situation of Jammu & Kashmir will not change with the change of faces and till the military occupation of India is there, neither will the political uncertainty and instability end in Jammu & Kashmir and nor can we hope for the lasting peace in the region.”
While commenting over the possibilities of future dialogues with New Delhi, he said, “A sound and matured person can’t turn away from the importance and significance of the dialogues and the issues are always settled on the tables even after the wars.”
He, however, said that a favorable atmosphere is vital for a successful dialogues process and “I had said in 2010 that the Hurriyat Conference will definitely not run away from the talks if India is ready to shun their extremist policies and accept the disputed nature of Kashmir, start the demilitarization in the state, black laws are repealed, political prisoners are released and the killings of 2010 are investigated upon.”
The Hurriyat (G) chairman said that by using force and atrocities or by giving perks and benefits, the Kashmir issue was neither solved in the past and nor is it possible in the future. “By closing eyes like ostrich, Indian rulers can’t change the reality. It will be better for them that instead of making the Kashmir issue a point of prestige, they should show some flexibility in their stand and show extra courage and farsightedness for the permanent and final solution of the long pending dispute,” he said.
Meanwhile senior pro-freedom leaders Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Ghulam Nabi Sumji, Ayaz Akbar, Amir Hamza, Raja Mehraj-ud-din and Mohammad Ashraf Laya met Masrat Alam at his residence.
