Devastating floods in September 2014 had breached Jhelum embankments at as many as 157 spots, the government informed the legislative council early this week. While temporary restoration of all these cuts was done, not a single of the severe 66 spots was treated so far on permanent basis.
Irrigation minister told the house that they spent Rs 6.86 crore of Rs 7.55 crore released by the finance ministry for temporary restoration of 157 cuts and breaches. For permanent restoration of 66 spots, the department required Rs 16.39 crore which was released. It is, however, yet to be spent as the works have been tendered and may take some more time.
Irrigation minister also said that dredging activity was taken up at various places. However, he said, ‘comprehensive controlled dredging’ will be completed only after Rs 401 crore “Priority Flood Management Plan” is approved by the Water Resources Ministry of the Government of India.
