Hakim Yasin condemns thrashing of Kashmiri prisoners in Tihar jail

Srinagar

Expressing concern over the reports of torture of Kashmiri prisoners in Tihar jail, Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) President and MLA Khansahib Hakim Mohammad Yasin on Tuesday said that on one hand Government of India’s interlocutor is in Kashmir and on the other inmates in jails are being harassed and tortured at the hands of jail staff.

“This is not tolerable that jail staff will harass and torture Kashmiri prisoners in jails. Talks and harassment can’t go together. If somebody is in jail, the law will take its own course, but jail staff can’t be given free hand to attack them,” Yasin said in a statement.

Demanding a proper inquiry into the reports of attacks and torture on Kashmiri prisoners in Tihar jail, he said, “Government must hold an inquiry into the issue so that such things aren’t repeated in future. Law is supreme and nobody can take it into his own hands.”

“Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) and violence can’t go hand-in-hand. On one hand, you talk about the peace process and CBMs and on the other jail staff attacks prisoners in jails. It is unfortunate,” the PDF chief added
