5 drug peddlers nabbed in Kupwara

KUPWARA: In a bid to eradicate the menace of drugs and psychotropic substances ruining the lives of youth, police on Thursday claimed to have arrested five notorious drug peddlers from different areas of northern Kupwara district and recovered two kilograms of charas and three bottles of liquor from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Ghulam Rasool Wani of Doursa Lolab, Nazir Ahmad Ganie of Dogerpora Kalaroose, Abdul Rashid Ganie of Gund Kralpora, Bilal Ahmad Mir of Muqam Awoora and Tariq Ahmad Dar of Bumhama.

“A special team of police apprehended the accused. Their arrest is likely lead to more arrests and recoveries,” Shamsher Hussian, Senior Superintendent of police told Kashmir Wire.

“Police is committed to eradicate this menace from the district. I appeal everyone especially parents and youth to come forward and support police in curbing the menace that is ruining the lives of youth,” he added.

With their arrest, police in this frontier district in its crackdown against drug peddlers have arrested 45 accused so far this year including four allegedly involved in smuggling of narcotic from across the Line of control (LoC).

Drugs and psychotropic substances including 24 kilograms of charas, 2 kilograms of Heroin and 4.5 Kgs of brown sugar worth millions of rupees in international market have been recovered from the accused, officials said.

In addition, large quantity of banned drugs including codeine and of proxovan have also been recovered from drug peddlers, they added. (Kashmir Wire)
