The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, once again, on Tuesday expressed serious concern on the human rights situation in Kashmir. UNHRC sought immediate access for its team to visit the valley.

“The High Commissioner is seriously concerned about the human rights situation in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir as well as the rising tensions between India and Pakistan,” a statement issued by Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Rupert Colville, said.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein is the Commissioner for UNHRC.

“We urge India and Pakistan to engage in a dialogue and to de-escalate the situation,” he said adding, “the inflammatory remarks on both sides only fuel the tensions and could result in a further deterioration of the human rights situation.”

Reiterating their demand to travel to divided Kashmir, the UNHRC’s spokesperson said, “our call for unfettered and unconditional access to both Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-administered Kashmir to enable us to independently and impartially monitor the human rights situation.”

The UNHRC readily “offered support for efforts to de-escalate the situation”.

UNHRC, in a letter to India and Pakistan, in July sought access to visit both parts of Kashmir, however, India denied and Pakistan welcomed. It reiterated it twice further.
