Peoples Democratic Party Monday expressed serious concern over the huge loss to the public and government property due to incessant rains across Chenab Valley.

In a statement, the party senior leader and Member Legislative Council Firdous Tak said that the rains have created havoc across the state but the Chenab Valley has faced the brunt in particular. “As per the reports pouring in from various areas dozens of buildings have suffered partial to total damage while thousands of Kanals of land have also washed away due to rains and cloudburst at certain places”, he said adding that the situation is grim due to the deteriorating condition of Batote-Kishtwar National Highway and interior roads in the region.

The region had suffered huge loss in the winter, this year, and subsequent rains in March-April. “This time the situation has turned alarming as at some of the villages chances of landslides and sinking have increased many folds”, he said adding, “There is urgent need of collective and effective response to the exigency and all the government departments shall work in coordination to provide immediate relief to the affected”.

Drawing the attention of the state and union governments towards the matter, Tak demanded setting up of a Special Task Force to ascertain the ground situation and suggest coercive measures so as to prevent further soil erosion. He said that a comprehensive package shall also be worked out so that the affected people could get relief immediately.

The legislator also recalled that the government on the floor of Legislative Council had assured to take immediate measures for dozen of sinking villages around dam site of Dul Hasti Hydro Electric Project constructed on the downstream of river Chenab. The inhabitants of these are facing great threat of life and property but no team has visited the place so far. He urged the concerned ministry to take immediate measures in this regard.
