MLA Habbakadal Demands Probe in Death of City Youth

Police Sunday recovered the body of 16-year old boy, who had disappeared on Eid, from river Jehlum at Shadipora, Sumbal.

A Police spokesperson said that Owais Ahmad Fuffo son of Mohammad Ismail of Manderbagh Gawkadal was untraced since Eid (July 18) when his parents reported to police that their 16-year old son had gone missing mysteriously. He added that a manhunt was launched to trace the boy; however, he remained untraced till today.

The spokesperson said that locals of Shadipora found a body floating in river Jehlum and informed police. The police later fished out the body and identified it as that of missing Owais. The body was later handover to his parents, police said.

Eyewitnesses said that pall of gloom descended entire Gawkadal area as the news about the death of the missing boy spread. Parents and relatives of the deceased were inconsolable, eyewitnesses added.

Youth in Maisuma area came out on streets to protest against the mysterious death of the Manderbagh boy. They were demanding probe into the matter. Police tried to stop the youth from coming on streets, but the youth remained adamant and later pelted stones on police.

Meanwhile, MLA Habbakadal Shameema Firdous who also reached the spot expressed sympathy and solidarity with the bereaved family.

Talking to KNS, she appealed state government to launch a thorough probe into the circumstances that led to the missing of 16-year old boy and his subsequent death. “I also appeal police to investigate the matter in a time bound manner so that truth comes to fore and there remains no doubt in the minds of parents and relatives about how their boy died,” she said.

DIG Central Kashmir Ghulam Hassan Bhat said that police have started investigation into the matter under section 174. He said that as per the missing report with the police, the boy had gone missing on Eid.

“We have launched the investigation and will soon be able to solve the case of the boy’s death,” he said, adding that people should cooperate with police.
