Incumbent Langate lawmaker, Engineer Rasheed along with hundreds of residents of Sarmarg and neighbouring villages Friday held a sit-in outside the Zachaldara police station against the alleged highhandedness of police in the area.
Talking to Kashmir Life, Rasheed said that the police station has been calling the respectable civilians of Sarmarg to police station repeatedly and harassing them. “Yesterday and today, a senior government teacher, Muhammad Amin, was called to the police station and harassed repeatedly.”
Pertinently, on Eid, Army, SOG had ransacked houses, thrashed youth at Sarmarag in Handwara.
Later, thousands of people led by Er Rasheed had held a massive anti-Army protest in the area.
Rasheed said that to fulfil his duty towards the people, “I along with three dozen people started a sit-in outside the Zachaldara police station. Hundreds of residents including felmale’s, later, turned out and joined the protest.
Later, SP of the area, Tehsildar and other senior officials visited the spot and pacified the protesters.
However, Rasheed put forward 4 demands to the officials, which, Rasheed said, were agreed upon.
The demands include:
- No person should be named in the FIR.
- Police will not call any person from the area to the police station.
- Police will file a report against the Army, for highhandedness on EID day.
- Within a few days, SP of the area and Army officials will visit Sarmarg and restore the sense of dignity and security among the people.
Rasheed, later, after being assured that his demands will be fulfilled, called off the protest.
