Nirmal Singh Is Speaker

SRINAGAR: Dr Nirmal Singh of BJP was finally elected the Speaker of J&K Legislative Assembly.

Though teh opposition has nominated Usman Majeed as the opposition candidates, Dr Singh got the maximum votes. It was a voice vote.

NC leader Shafi Urvi had suggested that since there are problems in teh system and conduct of rules, elections can be deferred about which has happened in past as well. But the ruling coalition moved ahead and sought the votes. Since teh treasury benches have the maximum number of berths in teh house, Dr Sibgh faced no problems in getting elected to the coveted position. Law Minister Basharat Bukhari moved the motion for the vote.

Shafi who was articulating the opposition viewpoint left the voice soon after.

Later, Mian Altaf delivered a speech asking the government that the session should be extended so that issues of teh people are raised. It has been the second year, he said, that no session of teh assembly took place in Srinagar.
