Over a thousand faithful broke their fast at The Bund late Saturday evening at an Iftaar party hosted by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).

As holy Ramzan nears end, leaders and people from across the ideological and political divide congregated on The Bund overlooking river Jhelum last evening. Amid prayers, the speakers stressed on unity amongst different sects of Kashmiri Muslims and separatists as well.

Given the “unity” in resistance camp, of late, the Iftaar party hosted by JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik witnessed participation of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, representatives of Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani, Jama’at-e-Islami J&K, Pandit, Sikh bodies and trade bodies.

Geelani, who remains under continuous house detention, could not attend the Iftaar Milan.

In his brief address, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq lashed out state government for its rigid policy viz-a-viz “Sainik, Pandit Colonies and New Industrial Policy”. He said that if state government doesn’t roll back such policies, “united resistance camp will come up with a protest program” post Eid-ul-Fitr.

Mirwaiz criticised J&K government for “promotion of liquor in state”. He said, “liquor is basis of all the evils and it is ironic that state government was promoting it.”

The Hurriyat Conference (m) chief promised people that “the resistance camp was serious about the grave issues facing Kashmiris”. “We will not let any anti-Kashmir policy succeed,” he told the audience.

In his presidential address, JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik maintained that the Iftaar Milan was aimed at “showcasing unity in file and rank of Kashmiris”.

“Ba-Khuda (By-God!), the aim of this Iftaar party aims at unity of Kashmiris,” Malik told the guests, “there was crisis among us a few years back which was created on the basis of sects but today, we want to tell world that Kashmiris are one.”

He said that wisdom lies “in following ones faith strictly and not interfering in others’ religious matters”.

Malik added that resistance camp was “united and will take the movement to its logical end”.

He lashed out at government for “jailing ailing 87 year old Geelani”. “This is height of oppression that our octogenarian Hurriyat chief is under house detention even in Ramzan,” he said.

Notably, the number of guests at the JKLF Iftaar Milan was twice the number of those invited.

The Iftaar Milan was addressed by academic Prof Sheikh Showkat Hussain who said, “the goal of all separatists is same; may be strategies are different.”

Gh Rasool Hami of Karwan-i-Islami appealed people to boycott liquor.
