In a first of its kind, a two day ‘Book Fair-cum-Literary Meet’ festival was thrown open at Sangarmal here on Sunday.
The festival, with an aim to revive book reading culture, is being organized by Director of School Education, Kashmir.
Hundreds of students, parents and teachers who had come from various parts of valley visited the multi-plex, and were enthralled by classic and western music besides a collection of thousands of books.
Director School Education Kashmir, Dr Shah Faesal said that idea behind organizing this event is a “tribute to literature”. “This is a big moment for us,” he told students who were walked along him while seeing the collection of books on display at various stalls installed inside the Sangarmal complex. “After long winter vacations; neglect and slowness, we are heading towards Spring which itself is synonym of hope and optimism.”
The books on display have been published by Kashmir’s own publishers. Books ranging from History, Literature, Science, Urdu, English, Persian are making people to stop and give a read.
Mudasir Ahmed, working with a book publishing house, said, “Kashmir is lacking book reading culture as compared to other states of India. Fairs like these would help to inculcate a sense of book reading in Kashmir.”
The students mostly from far off government schools thronged the venue. A student from Sopore, Zainab while narrating her experience said, “such events give us an idea to look beyond traditional syllabus which is essential for the mental and intellectual growth.” “We hope, next time, book fair and reading session are held in my native town.”
Mudasir said, although, there was lack of reading culture amongst the youth, however, “books mostly on conflict, are in great demand like the recently released ‘Do You Remember Kunan-Poshpora?’ and ‘Many Faces of Kashmiri Nationalism’.”
