All the shops and other business establishments remained closed while the vehicular movement was severely affected.
Protest demonstrations were staged by the locals at several places against the killing of Muhammad Yaqoob in alleged police firing during a demolition drive in Sarore area of Bari-Brahmana and the “illegal detention” of Prof SAR Geelani in the aftermath of Afzal Guru Event in Press Club of India in New Delhi early this month.
The protestors expressed solidarity with JNU by holding banners and placards with messages calling for the release of former DU Prof SAR Geelani and JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) president, Kanhaiya Kumar. Prof Geelani and Kumar are facing sedition charges.
They called for immediate and unconditional release of Kanhaiya Kumar and Prof SAR Geelani besides revocation of sedition charges against them, reports said.
The protestors blocked all the roads, including the main Kishtwar-Doda-Batote road by burning tyres. Imam of the Jamia Masjid led the protests in Kishtwar town.
The protesters also demanded judicial probe into the killing of Mohammed Yaqoob and appealed the Governor N N Vohra to personally monitor the situation.
They said that the law and order situation in the region has been deteriorating and that the Governor should review the situation for the safety of the minority community.
While addressing the gathering, Imam of the Jamia Masjid accused BJP of being “desperate” to create trouble for the minorities. “Since they formed the government in the state, BJP wanted to evict the Gujjars from the land under their possession,” the protesters alleged.
