The family of Kashmir University student whom police have arrested for his alleged links with militancy Friday refuted the police claims that Muzamil Farooq Dar is involved in militancy.
Muzamil, a student of Kashmir University’s English department has been arrested by police for his alleged links with militants. The police have claimed that Muzamil, a resident of Gandibagh Kakapora hamlet of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, was wanted in a case under FIR number 90 of Police Station Rajbagh. His arrest sparked violent protests in Varsity, forcing University authorities to suspend class work till June 27. The protesting students and the class mates of Muzamil believe that he was arrested for organizing anti-Yoga protest in Varsity that rocked there on the night of June 20 Saturday.
All the family members of Muzamil including his grandfather Muhammad Akram, mother Parveena Bano, sister Nazima Jan and father Farooq Ahmed are firm that Muzamil can never be involved in any kind of militancy. “We know him well. His aim is to complete his Post Graduation from Kashmir University. Ask anyone in our village about him and they will tell you what kind of person he is. He has been implicated in a false case and we fail to understand why police did so,” Muhamamd Akram said.
Even the neighbours of Muzamil claimed that he is innocent. “The Dar family has not produced a singly militant even during 1990’s and now the police claim that Muzamil Dar is linked to militancy is astounding and strange one,” said a friend and neighbour of Muzamil Farooq Dar.
The parents of Muzamil Farooq who were present in Police Station Rajbagh to meet their son were confident of his release. When asked why his son has been arrested, Farooq Ahmed Dar quoting some police officials said that the cell phone of Muzamil has been misused. “Some police officials told me that a phone call has been made to some militants from Muzamil’s cell number and that is why he has been arrested. The officials have assured me that he will be released if proven innocent,” Dar said.
A top police official on condition of anonymity said that a militant is operating an Over Ground Workers (OGW) network in Kashmir especially in Srinagar city. “During investigation, we traced the cell number of Muzamil and that is why he was arrested for questioning. If proven innocent he will be released,” he said.
When CNS asked about the nature of FIR under which Muzamil has been booked, Station House Officer Police Station Rajbagh Kuldeep said that the FIR vide number 40 has been lodged against an active foreign militant who has been operating a network of OGW’s in Srinagar. “This FIR is related to a non-local militant who is operating a network. This FIR mentions the names of certain OGW’s out of few have already been arrested,” he said.
