Hurriyat Conference (G) chairperson Syed Ali Geelani continues to remain under house arrest from last 65 days and he was today second time in this holy month of Ramadan stopped from offering Friday congregational prayers, spokesperson of the Hurriyat (G) said in a statement.

“It is now 9th time after he returned from New Delhi in April when he was stopped from performing his religious duties,” he said while terming the government action as coercion and interference in the religious affairs.

Akbar condemned it in strong words and said that the “saffroni” Chief Minister has adopted the same policy with regarding to the Geelani which his predecessor Omar Abdullah had assumed. “His (Mufti’s) political slogan of ‘Battle of Ideas’ has completely failed. Geelani Sahab returned to Srinagar on 15 April from New Delhi and after just two days he was placed under house arrest and from then this process is continue. During this period Geelani Sahab offered Friday prayer on 1st May after he gave a slip to the police and reached Tral in the heart of the night. On 5th June, he again participated in the Friday congregational prayers because that day he was having an appointment with the passport officer to complete the formalities with regarding to his travel documents so his house arrest was put off for the day but as soon as he returned in the afternoon, he was same day once again detained in his home,” he said.

According to the spokesperson, Hurriyat Conference many times tried to know that under which act and which section of the law is Geelani has been continuously put under house arrest “but the police and administration has failed so far in providing any document in this regard.”

The Hurriyat (G) spokesperson alleged that the presumption of “strong politician” about the Mufti Sayeed has got badly exposed and he has proven to be a very weak politician before his alliance partners. “He has no courage to say ‘No’ to the orders from Nagpur and he is just fulfilling the desires of RSS with regarding to the Geelani Sahab and other pro-freedom leaders in Kashmir,” he alleged.

The Hurriyat (G) appealed the Amnesty International and other human rights organizations to take notice of the detention of Geelani and use their influence for his release.
