Strongly condemning the use of brutal force by the police over the Kashmir University students who were protesting against the “unjust arrest” of one of their colleagues, Chairman All Parties Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani said that it is the worst kind of “state terrorism” and it has no moral and constitutional justifications.
According to a statement issued Thursday evening, Geelani while expressing his “surprise and deep sorrow” over the arrest of a Kashmir University student for opposing the “Yoga” day, he demanded his immediate release.
“Whatever the reality or the purpose of this “Yoga” is but it can’t be thrust upon the people and no civilized society can force the people to adopt the tradition or religious sign of any other religion,” the statement quoted him as having said.
Strongly condemning the arrest of Muzamil Farooq Dar, a student of KU’s English department by the police, Geelani said that the university administration is duty bound to take serious notice of the arrest of the said student and use their influence for his immediate release.
“Playing with the career of the students has become norm in Jammu & Kashmir. They are arrested on false and baseless charges and then FIR is registered against them on the same fabricated cases. It is a killing for the future of the students and it can’t be termed other than the state terrorism,” Geelani added.
Terming the implementation of “Yoga” program as “undemocratic and unjustified”, senior Hurriyat leader said that yoga is not only a body exercise but it is “linked with a particular culture” and it can’t be thrust upon the people.
“Like in the any Muslim country in the world, the people related to other faiths can’t be forced to offer Salah or Fasting, in the same way the Muslims can’t be forced to do “Yoga”,” he said.
