Landslides stop traffic on Sgr-Jmu highway

KL Report

SRINAGAR

The authorities had to close Srinagar-Jammu highway for traffic when many landslides came down on the highway at Panthal and other areas on Thursday morning.

The authorities immediately halted the traffic and pressed into service men and machine to clear the landslides. Sources said that it will take hours together to clear the road.

Sources said that hundreds of vehicles are stranded on the highway which had started their journey early morning from Jammu to Srinagar.

Pertinently, Kashmir valley witnessed heavy snowfall in the last week during which roads and highways were badly damaged. The high peaks along the Srinagar Jammu highway are also snow bound which has now started melting resulting in the landslides even the weather is dry.

300 kms long highway is the only road link between Kashmir and rest of the world.

The historical Mughal road is seen as an alternative but it is yet to be opened formally though the road remains very busy during summer and people prefer to travel on it.
