Earthquake Tilts Minaret of Khanqah-e-Moula Shrine in Srinagar

Minaret of the revered Sufi Shrine Shah Hamadan Khaqah-e-Moula near Fateh Kadal in Srinagar has sustained damage in the earthquake that struck Kashmir Monday afternoon.

Apex of the shrine was knocked loose and titled after a powerful quake rattled the Kashmir region Monday afternoon.

As per the reports, the devotees came out in panic as soon as the earth begun to shake. “The whole area was in the chaos,” sources said.

On Monday, powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale jolted parts of Kashmir Monday snapping communication services and electricity supply. According to Indian Metrological Department, the epicentre was at the Hindu Kush Mountains in Afghanistan with the depth of 190 km.

Built in 1395 A.D, Khanqah-e-Moula is one of the oldest mosques in the Kashmir Valley. The year 1480 saw the shrine being ruined in a devastating fire. Later, the shrine was reconstructed and restored by the then ruler Sultan Hassan Shah. Again, in 1493 AD.
