An army personnel was killed in a “gunfight” in the forest area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Wednesday evening.
A news gathering agency, GNS quoted sources, said that army’s 14 RR, commandos of 7 PARA and Special Operation Group (SOG) of police today morning launched massive cordon-and-search operation in the forest area of Bhutoo, some 5 KM from main town Bandipora.
Earlier, the joint team of forces had launched the operation at Slynder forest area of Shok Baba village in Summlar of the district to track down the suspected militants hiding inside the forest area.
“The forces,” according to sources, “fired few warning shots towards the suspected spot; the militants present in the area opened fire upon the forces triggering off a gunfight between the two sides.”
During the initial exchange of fire, Indian army Rifleman Samod of 14 RR sustained bullet wounds and was immediately evacuated army’s 92 base hospital here in Srinagar where he succumbed to injuries, they said. The sources said that army also pressed choppers into services and have sealed all exit routes.
The army’s Srinagar based defence official confirmed to GNS that an army personnel lost his life in “an on-going operation”.
“The joint team of forces launched the operation in the forest area following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of some suspected militants”, he said.
Srinagar based PRO of Army, Lt Col N N Joshi didn’t respond to phone calls from Kashmir Life to independently verify the incident.
