A Territorial Army man allegedly involved in the fake currency case was found dead in Ram Munshi Bagh Police Station Srinagar, Thursday morning.
Police sources told Kashmir Life that Mohammad Munawar Manhas, son of Nazir Ahmad Manhas of Territorial Army (166 Battalion) was arrested under case FIR No. 29/2014 U/S 489/ABC, 420 RPC on Wednesday.
Hailing from Saraibala, Bandi Kamalkote Uri, Manhas was allegedly involved in the fake currency case unearthed in the month of March.
Though officials are tight lipped about how Manhas died, however sources said that he was found dead in the bath room of the police station.
“An investigation has been ordered in the matter to ascertain the cause of his death,” sources said.
They added that Manhas was part of the network involved in the distribution of fake currency not only in Srinagar but in Delhi as well and the network has some members active outside India.
Pertinently police had arrested 12 members of a fake currency racket operating across the valley and recovered had Rs. 8,85,000 from them in the month of March.
Acting on a tip off, police had laid a Naka at Badyari Chowk near Nehru Park and intercepted one, Arshad Ahmed from whom fake currency worth Rs 3,500 was recovered.
During questioning Arshad had revealed that he had deposited some fake currency notes in Punjab National Bank Boulevard Branch besides depositing fake currency worth Rs. 60,000 at Cash Deposit Machine (CDM) of SBI Residency Road Srinagar.
It had also come to surface that a resident of Khawaja Bagh, Baramulla was the kingpin of the racket who was also arrested later.
Police had arrested 13 persons including Manhas who are allegedly involved in the fake currency racket.
