Shopian encounter ends, 3 local militants, 2 army men killed

All the three militants hiding in a residential house in south Kashmir’s Shopian district were killed on Saturday after an overnight encounter, police said on Saturday.


“The operation ended today on the death of two militants and two army men including a Mjor,” IG Kashmir, AG Mir told Kashmir Life.


Sources said that two residential houses were also damaged in the 24 hour long encounter.


Major Mukund Vardharajan alias Mohit, of 44 RR and the Sipyi identified as Vikrant was killed in the encounter in Karewa Manlo village, of Shopian.


The deceased militants were identified as Muhammad Asif Wani, a resident of Drubgam Pulwama, Abdul Haq of Arwani, Shopian, and Shabir Ahmad Gorsi of Keller.


The gunfight broke out between the militants and forces on Friday after a specific intelligence input about their presence in Karewa Manlo village.


The major and a Sipoyi were killed in the operation against the militants on Friday while another army man was injured. He is said to be critical.


All the three militants were affiliated with Hizbul Mujahidden militant outfit, police sources said.


They added that the house in which militants were holed up was completely destroyed and an adjacent house also was damaged to a large extent.
