Shut down and clashes in Shopian against ‘arrest spree’

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Amid Shut down, protests erupted in volatile South Kashmir’s Shopian town on Tuesday against the arrest of at least 15 youth in nocturnal raids. People alleged that CRPF personnel barged into their houses after night protests and besides causing damages to their houses beat them to pulp.

Reports said that Shopian town observed complete shutdown against the arrest spree. Protestors clashed with police and CRPF personnel while police used tear smoke shells to disperse them. Residents told CNS that during nocturnal raids in different areas of Shopian town, police arrested at least 15 youth, an allegation denied by police.

“People staged a protest during night against the arrest spree while CRPF personnel thrashed the protestors and damaged the window panes of dozens of houses,” a resident of Bonabazar Shopian Muhammad Hamad said.

The locals identified some of the arrested youth as Zubir Turray, Naveed Lone and Jabiz Ahmed.

Superintendent of Police Shopian Showkat Ahmed said that they have arrested an alleged notorious stone-pelter Zubir Turray who was involved in the attack on the Professors of Kashmir University. “Police never arrests any innocent and peace loving person. Any one indulging in the disruption of peace is subject to legal action,” he said.
