Shopian encounter: 2 army men, 2 militants killed, 2 houses destroyed

The encounter in the South town of Shopian, which is going on since last 24 hours, has devoured an army Major, Sipoyi and two militants so far.


The encounter had started on Friday in Karewa, Manlo village, a few kms from Shopian on the banks of Ranbi Ara.


Police sources told Kashmir Life that Major Mukund Vardarajan alias Mohit of 44 RR and Sipoyi Vikrant were killed last evening.


“We recovered the body of Sipoyi Vikrant and his service rifle today morning,” DIG South Kashmir Vijay Kumar told reporters at the encounter site.


He added that bodies of the two militants have also been spotted. “One of the bodies is lying in the bath room of the residential house, it is the body of the militant who opened fire early Saturday,” The DIG said.


Police sources said that body of Vikrant was lying throughout the night alongside the debris of one of the residential houses destroyed during the encounter.


They said that army has called for a JCB and a search in the debris has been started. Sources said that the bodies of two militants have also been recovered from the debris.


Pertinently, police on Friday evening had said that three militants were hiding and two among them were killed in the very early hours of the encounter.


Locals told Kashmir Life on phone that two residential houses were damaged during the encounter.
