SRINAGAR: As the long awaited twelfth class results were finally declared by the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education on January 22, the girls have outshined the boys. Of the 12 toppers, there are only two boys.

The results were released around 12 noon. In absence of the internet facility, the results came in the older gazette format. However, the gazette was a pdf that went viral from one pen driver to another. Some of the students rang up their relatives outside Kashmir to check their results online.
A total of 46599 students had appeared in the annual higher secondary part two examinations, of whom 35454 students passed. With just a small number of students unable to qualify the examination, the pass percentage for the year 2019 was 76%.
According to data provided by the Board officials 10408 students are distinction holders, 15684 students have passed in First Division, 7756 had Second Division and 1606 students got third division.
It said 10780 students have failed in one or more subjects and 365 have failed in all subjects, adding that that 55 students have not appeared in examination and 207 students have disputed eligibility. The results of 128 students are withheld and examinations of eight students were cancelled.
This time, yet again, the girls have outshined the boys bagging top positions. Surprisingly, in the home science stream all the top ten positions were bagged by girls from different regions of Kashmir valley. Interestingly, all of them were from Government run schools.
Also, the arts stream has a total of sixteen toppers – all girls. Aijaz Ahmad Mir from HSS Satura is just one boy among the lot of arts toppers.
Toppers of the faculty of science and commerce are from different schools both private and government. The first position was shared by Humera Rashid from HSS Lasjan and Isha Bashir from Mallinson Girls’ school.
The Kashmiri students, this season, faced an added anxiety due to the inaccessibility of results due to the internet clampdown. The results this year were checked mostly on gazettes. The PDFs of which were widely circulated all over the student community.
Sadaf Bilal from a renowned institution of Kashmir vents out her frustration, stating how difficult and uneasy it was for her to get the result checked. “Due to the non-availability of internet, I was forced to call my relatives living outside Kashmir, so that they could check my result,” she says. She adds that the gazettes have definitely added to the relief of the students but they are not as readily available as the results in the past have been.
Sahil, a distinction holder from Srinagar is happy with his result. With a mix of feelings and emotions, Sahil says that the whole experience of taking the test amidst the shutdown and then expecting the results in the same situation was riveting. “Although I was not able to check the result myself but I was extremely content with the score I had achieved,” he said.
Afshana Jameel, a topper from HSS Anantnag talked to Kashmir Life and expressed her contentment will full zest. Afshana says: “I had not expected that I would appear in the merit list and would be one among the toppers.” She adds that one of her friends from the same school, Zaira Jan has also been in the toppers’ list. Afshana says that her parents haven’t been this happier ever before.
Zardat Zahoor, daughter of Zahoor Ahmad and Rifat Zahoor is a student of Green Valley Educational Institute has bagged seventh position in science stream. When asked about being a topper, Zardat didn’t even have an idea of her being among the top ten merit holders of the examination. “I didn’t even know that I was seventh in the list. I just got my result checked from some board official and came to know I had scored 96.2%,” she said.
Zardat spoke with a shiver of contentment in her voice. Zardat added that preparing amidst the turmoil and the uncertainty equated to psychological depression. She exclaims with revulsion: “I had no other choice but to work really hard for my 12th class exam. Our syllabus was almost complete but the uncertainty doubled up by the internet shutdown created a sense of anxiety and agony. I was helpless but had to prepare in any case.” She adds that her parents are extremely proud of her victory and are happier than ever before.
Zuha, a third-position holder from Green Valley School was informed about her victory by the school itself. Zuha’s father Niyaz Ahmad Ghani says that he is very happy on his daughter’s result. Niyaz is an engineer and was informed by the school staff that his daughter had bagged third position in the valley. Niyaz expressed his contentment with Kashmir Life and was certain that Zuha will excel in other fields of life with the same determination.
Ilsa Gulzar, a daughter of Gulzar Ahmad is also a student of Green Valley Educational Institute has topped in commerce stream with 486 marks.
Ilsa, a resident of Habbak Naseembagh, is excited that she has topped in Commerce stream. Her father Gulzar Ahmad is businessman and her mother is house wife.
Preparing for the examination was not so easy. Initially, she said she faced many problems due to lockdown and internet gag in Kashmir, which fizzled out gradually as she got familiar with the new routine. “We don’t attended classes continuously due to shutdown but our school do best to complete our syllabus on time.”
She said that she want to complete her studies in commerce and want to join her father in business.
Humera Rashid, a student of Kashmir Institute of Excellence Lasjan Srinagar topped in Science stream. She is a resident of Humhama Srinagar.
“I am happy and thankful to Almighty Allah who give me strength and make me capable to appear in examination,” she said. “I am also thankful to my parents and teachers who supported and helped me a lot.”
She said Kashmiri students have got the best brains and if they utilize it in best way they will achieve wonders.
