Srinagar
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken over the high-profile case of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Davinder Singh, for helping militants get safe passage outside the Valley. The NIA is likely to take the DSP to Delhi for further interrogation, The Tribune reported.
Davinder was caught along with top Hizbul Mujahideen militants, including Naveed Babu, on January 11. Naveed, a former cop was the prime accused in the killing of non-local labourers and truckers, in south Kashmir in October last year.
The NIA took over the case after receiving an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“Three Hizbul Mujahideen militants and DSP (Davinder Singh) were arrested along with arms and ammunition while they were travelling in a car, near Qazigund on the national highway. In this regard, a case was registered at the Qazigund police station,” a spokesman for the NIA said.
“After receiving the MHA’s order, the NIA has re-registered the case and started the investigation,” he said.
Quoting sources newspaper The Tribune said that after taking over the case, the NIA is expected to take Davinder Singh to New Delhi for interrogation.
“The DSP had tried to save himself by concocting a story that he was taking these militants to make them surrender, but his theory was not accepted by the police,” The Tribune quoted a source as saying.
The arrest of the top counter-insurgency officer, who was posted at the sensitive Srinagar International Airport, along with top militants has unnerved the authorities as it could take the lid off possible nexus between militants and some policemen.
While Davinder has been suspended, J&K Police have also recommended his sacking.
