Jammu and Kashmir High Court Tuesday quashed Public Safety Act (ACT) slapped on Hurriyat Conference (g) Secretary General (III), Masarat Alam, and ordered his release.
Alam, who heads Muslim League, was slapped third PSA since April 03 2015. He was releases from jail after over 50 months in March post PDP-BJP forming the coalition government in J&K headed by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
He was arrested soon for raising Pakistani flag and anti-national slogans at a rally when Hurriyat Conference was receiving its octogenarian chairperson, Syed Ali Geelani. Geelani was returning valley from New Delhi where he usually spends winter months.
Spokesperson of Muslim League, Rafiq Ganaie, told Kashmir Life that Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar quashed the PSA slapped on Masarat Alam. “Justice Attar directed police to release Masarat Alam forthwith,” he said.
He added Masarat Alam has been slapped PSA 31 times since 1990.
Notably, Alam rose to become Secretary General (III) in Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani in recent reshuffle. Shabir Ahmad Shah and Gh Nabi Sumji are two other Secretaries General of the Hurriyat amalgam.
