Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Thursday refuted a news report carried by a web portal “Citing hygiene, SKIMS imposes ban on hijab.”
“Considering religious/cultural sensitivities news report has potential to create unnecessary apprehension among religious/social groups in particular and society at large about the institute. SKIMS deny any such guideline or direction from the director SKIMS. Wearing hijab is not only personal choice but also religious obligation and no institute or individual can interfere and restrain anyone to practice the same. This is highly regrettable on part of the news website to publish such story which is not only factually incorrect but also based on assumption,” a spokesperson of the SKIMS said in a statement to KNS.
“Lifestyle choices are personal and SKIMS can no way impose ban on hijab and force individuals to do so. However, SKIMS advised nursing staff to wear name plates as identification mark and SKIMS deny that any such statement has been made where nursing staff and students have been told to shun hijab and make it clear that no administrative authority has any right to challenge religious obligations/norms,” the statement said.
“Maintaining hygiene is of utmost importance in patient care and any medical practitioner and expert is well versed with set guidelines on hygiene in health care. We would like to make it clear that SKIMS respect religious and cultural choices and appeal you to put our point through,” it added.
