At a time when the common people of Kashmir frightened by the dreaded H1N1 virus are looking forward to the medicos, the doctors have opted for protests for the non-availability of protection masks and vaccination of the working medicos.
Resident Doctors Association in a statement Monday alleged that authorities are not paying any heed to their demands despite numerous reminders and meetings with the SMHS administration.
“No steps have been taken for providing protective gears (N95 masks and other PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) and vaccination of the working medicos in hospitals,” the statement said.
“No one of the medicos working in any hospital including SMHS, LD hospital, CD Hospital AND bone & joint hospital have been provided with N95 masks and other PPE,” the statement alleged adding “the masks provided by the administration are dusting masks which in no way are comparable to the standard N95 masks.”
The statement said that even the doctors who have been posted at the swine flu unit at CD hospital have not been provided any equipment or vaccination.
“The doctors are supposed to be the group who has to combat the virus but unfortunately they are themselves falling prey to it thus endangering its spread among the already susceptible patients admitted in the hospitals,” the statement said.
Procurement of vaccines and tamiflu tablets in SMHS and associated hospitals is a distant dream, the statement alleged. “Not even a single medico in SMHS or any of the associated hospitals has been vaccinated.”
“The only persons to be vaccinated were some people among the SMHS administration and that too at a time when they were in a denial about the positivity of any patient in SMHS hospital, the statement said.
The statement further alleged that deputy Medical Superintendent who also happens to be the nodal officer of SWINE FLU in SMHS misbehaved with doctors and even provoked the residents to go for strike but the resident doctors know and understand their commitment towards the profession and society.
The statement said that the residents have been making multiple attempts to meet Principal Medical College Srinagar for many days but the attempts proved futile.
