Tosamaidan fire range affected villages boycott the polls

KL Report

SRINAGAR

A call by Kashmir’s Tosamaidan Bachao Front (TBF) to boycott elections affected polling in hilly hamlets of Budgam where voter turnout used to be much higher in every election.

TBF had urged the people living in and around Tosamaidan to stay away from polls as according to the Front the government failed to made the order about ceasing lease extension to Army public.

Majority of the people living in affected hamlets like Shunglipora, Sitaran, Drang, Zogu, Chhil, Batapora, Brass, Sigan, Khaipora, Suheilpather, Lassipora and Habar honored the boycott call and people in lesser number arrived at polling booth.

“These are hilly areas and the people here never paid attention to the boycott call of separatist leaders, but this time they did not vote in large numbers. The average polling percentage in these hamlets used to be 70 to 80 percent but this time the percentage was below 15 percent,” one of the members of TBF Malik Ghulam Hasan told CNS adding that if the Government would not made the order about Tosamaidan lease public then it would start an agitation against the government.

Vote to NC is vote to Rahul: Omar

KL Report

BARAMULLA

Saying that every vote cast in favour of National Conference (NC) in the current Lok Sabha Elections in Kashmir Valley will be a vote for paving the way to make All India Congress, Vice President, Rahul Gandhi the Prime Minister of the Country, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who is also Working President of National Conference Wednesday said that the leadership of PDP is part of a tactical understanding aimed to bring Narendra Modi to power.

“Infact PDP is the hidden face of BJP and its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in Jammu and Kashmir”, Omar said and added that BJP wants to implement its anti-Jammu and Kashmir agenda through the PDP leadership as it did earlier in 2002 during the Chief Minister ship of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Addressing Election rallies and workers meeting in Uri, Baramulla and Sangrama after casting his vote in Srinagar in the morning, the Working President, National Conference said that the alliance between National Conference and Congress is aimed at safeguarding the Country’s pluralistic ethos and keeping communal and anti-Jammu and Kashmir forces away from the power in New Delhi.

Omar Abdullah said in contrast PDP, for the thirst of power is in league with communal forces represented by BJP to help Narendra Modi to become the Prime Minister of India. He said that deceptive politics and double faced strategy of PDP for power politics has got unearthed in the current Lok Sabha Elections when PDP fielded its candidates in Jammu and Udhampur constituencies against Congress-NC joint candidates, Madan Lal Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azad to effect a division in votes and help BJP.

“You have to read between the lines and understand this clandestine bonhomie between Narendra Modi and PDP leadership”, Omar Abdullah told the people asking them to foil the designs of these two parties to divide the people for their vested interests.

Describing Rahul Gandhi as an honest statesman and a true and tested friend of Jammu and Kashmir and an ideal representative of the secular, democratic traditons of India, Omar Abdullah said that our efforts should be to make him the Prime Minister of the country by exercising our franchise in favour of NC-Congress joint candidates and defeating communal forces. He said that the people of the State have to vote in favour of Rahul Gandhi to ensure peace and stability and liberal help to the State for its holistic and comprehensive development and this can be possible when we return NC-Congress joint candidates to the Parliament.

“A person like Narendra Modi nurturing a particular ideology and being totalitarian in approach cannot suit a secular and democratic India where various sections of the society are living in harmony since centuries”, he said.

Omar Abdullah appealed to the people of Baramulla-Kupwara constituency for voting whole-heartedly and in large number in favour of NC-Congress joint candidate, Sharif-ud-Din Shariq to strengthen Rahul Gandhi and the secular democratic characteristic of the Country.

Pattan gives cold shoulder to NC, venue changed for Omar’s rally

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Much embarrassment to the National Conference in Baramulla constituency on Tuesday, only few odd supporters of the party turned up to attend the election rally that was supposed to be addressed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The venue was later on changed on the instructions of Higher Education Minister and Omar Abdullah addressed few odd workers at the residence of former Member Parliament Abdul Rashid Shaheen.

Eyewitnesses told Srinagar based news gathering agency CNS that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was supposed to address an election rally at Eidgah Pattan in North Kashmir. Reports said that the stage was set for the rally while police had made elaborative security arrangements in this regard.

Sources told CNS that National Conference senior leader Muhammad Akbar Lone allegedly expressed anguish when he arrived at the venue amid tight security, as there were only few odd workers present there. Insiders said that Chief Minister was informed about the position and accordingly the rally was cancelled. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was taken to the residence of former Member Parliament and National Conference leader Abdul Rasheed Shaheen where Omar Abdullah addressed the workers in the precinct.

A top police official said that he does not know anything about politics as their job was to secure and seal the venue, which they did efficiently. “We had deployed nine companies of government forces to ensure the smooth conduct of the rally,” he said.

Minster for Higher Education Muhammad Akbar Lone told CNS that they did not change the venue but supporters wanted CM to visit Shaheen’s house.

National Conference leader Abdul Rasheed Shaheen admitted that people did not turn up and the venue was changed at the last minute. He said stringent security arrangements were one of the reasons that common people did not show up at Eidgah Pattan.

Crackdown on youth reflects NC’s use and throw policy: Mehbooba

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Condemning the indiscriminate arrest of the youth in the Valley Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti has said the participation in the elections offers the only route to take Kashmir out of repression, injustice and fear.

Addressing a number of rallies in Rafiabad segment of Baramulla constituency, Mehbooba said hundreds of youth have been locked up across the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency and rural areas of Kashmir to create an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear. “While in Srinagar this has been done ahead of elections, in South Kashmir it followed polling, apparently in accordance with a plan,” she said and added that they benefited from them in South Kashmir and then cracked down on them following the traditional use and throw policy of the NC.

She said the fact that the government has to resort to such draconian methods at the end of its six years rule and deny young men their right to vote by putting them in jails is a sad commentary on the failures of the National Conference-Congress government.

The PDP president said in 2008 even after the state was on a boil in the aftermath of Amarnath agitation people came out in large numbers to participate in elections because their faith in the electoral system had been revived by the PDP-led government.

“Our party had been cautioning that the reversal of the policies of the previous government would lead to further alienation have, unfortunately, come true and the state government is now resorting to illegitimate methods to subdue the anger against it. It is sad that while elections should have been a time to celebrate the right to choose a government in Kashmir the occasion has been converted into terrorization of people especially the youth,” said Mehbooba.

Appealing the people to vote for the PDP candidate, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Mehbooba said her party is not seeking a mandate for some of its leaders to occupy ministerial chairs in Delhi, but its aim is to end repression and terror which keeps revisiting Kashmir every now and then.

She said the ruling government has blocked all avenues for the youth to grow in a free and conducive atmosphere that could bring out the best of their talent. “Instead of providing such atmosphere, upgrading educational and skill development facilities and creating new job opportunities in line with requirements of the 21st century, the NC is pushing the youth to stone throwing and even picking up arms once again as was reflected in the sad story of Abdul Haq of Shopian.”

Mehbooba said the PDP is going to the Parliament with a positive agenda to push for a peaceful settlement of Jammu & Kashmir which was possible only through friendship between India and Pakistan and building of trust deficit between New Delhi and Kashmir. “Our party would forcefully and sincerely voice the concerns of people of J&K, their aspirations and would seek consensus at the national level for the peaceful settlement of the political issue, which had been till now missing as National Conference would use its mandate just to secure jobs for the members of Abdullah family,” she said.

“The aspirations of people of the state and their issues are priority before the PDP unlike the NC which considers power and luxury for itself as the only reason for holding elections,” she said adding that had NC not taken people for granted Kashmiris would not have been suffering this time and would not had lost many generations to the bad times.

Pre Poll tension grips Srinagar

KL Report

SRINAGAR

As the Kashmir is set for second round of polling on Wednesday, there is a pre-poll calm visible in Srinagar and its peripheries as the roads are seen comparatively deserted with thin traffic.

The high profile Srinagar Lok sabha seat is scheduled to go for polls on Wednesday with NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah and PDP leader Tariq Hamid Karra two main contestants.

The usual hustle bustle is missing from the roads and market in Srinagar. Since early Tuesday, the movement of traffic is very thin with Shalteng and Pantha Chowk crossings seeing almost no jams.

“It was very fertile driving today as I could easily pass hectic Shalteng Chowk,” Ab Rashid, a commuter said, adding, “Actually Srinagar is going to polls tomorrow and people preferred to leave for their homes earlier.”

The shopkeepers in Srinagar also complained about low business on Tuesday saying, “people did not turn up for shopping.”

South Kashmir Lok Sabha seat that went to polls on April 24 saw unprecedented violence, protests and pro freedom sloganeering on the day of polling. Two Panchs, a Lambardar and a youth were also killed ahead of polling in the area. Even on the day of polling, a polling official was killed in a militant attack in Shopian followed by a fierce gun battle which resulted in the killing of three militants, two army men including a Major.

Sources said that hundreds of the vehicles of Srinagar have been hired by the officials for poll duty. “It was too pathetic to get into the bus early this morning as there was no breathing space in the vehicle,” a passenger from Magam said and added that maximum of the vehicles are on poll duty and they were unable to find a spacious one. Same was the case in the afternoon when people started their journey to their homes.

Role of men in uniform in recent attacks can’t be ruled out: NC

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Pointing fingers at the government forces, Additional General Secretary of ruling National Conference (NC) Mustafa Kamal Monday said the involvement of uniformed men cannot be ruled out in the recent attacks in Kashmir.

Kamal, said: “We can’t rule out the hand of uniformed men in the recent attacks. There are vested interests and various shades in the belt force like people from Jamaat-e-Islami who in the past have carried out such attacks and they can do this time also.”

On Sunday, twin explosions rocked Khanyar in Old City and Magam in Central Kashmir. In Khanyar, explosion took place during the address of NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah. In Magam, the explosion took place when preparations for NC rally were underway and it left 17 people injured due to splinters according to hospital official. Both the attacks were claimed by Hizbul Mujahideen.

Kamal added: “various shades present among uniformed men also resort to violence.” He said the ‘violent elements’ among uniformed men have been caught in the past.

“These attempts are made to scare away voters to enforce boycott by the supporters and mentors of militants,” he said.

Hitting out at both Indian and Pakistan governments, Kamals said: “There are vested interests in Government of India and also in Pakistan,” adding: “They want to reclaim land of Kashmir and have nothing to do with people.”

“India is following ‘carrot and stick’ approach in Kashmir while Pakistan is taking revenge for 1947 from Kashmiri people,” he alleged.

The NC leader said there are few politicians in New Delhi who favour violence in Kashmir.

Slamming militants and pro-freedom leaders for asking people to boycott polls, Kamals said: “They have stopped people from voting by fear and gun. They are using Islam to justify their calls and approach. They resorted to killing. The movement of separatists is based on violence and hate.” He said the low turnout in South Kashmir is the fallout of killings and militant violence. (GNS)

Omar wasted no time to become minister in NDA: BJP

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Taking strong exception to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s criticism of Narendera Modi, BJP national executive member and former president of state unit of BJP Shamsher Singh said that National Conference and Congress are hitting left, right and the centre just to conceal their mis-governance and corruption.

“You will see Modi visiting Kashmir valley very soon. He has to take care of the entire country and is facing paucity of time. Dr Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah could not lead the state towards progress. They have failed in every respect especially development,” the BJP senior leader said.

He accused Dr Farooq Abdullah of failing to prevent Pandits from migrating to Jammu in 1990s. “Dr Farooq should have shown his contribution in preventing that migration. No doubt we supported Pandits when they migrated to Jammu but only on humanitarian grounds,” Singh said.

When asked about any soft chemistry between BJP-PDP as is alleged by NC and the Congress, the former J&K BJP president said: “We have no relation with the PDP and it is just to avoid attention of public and in order to conceal their failures that NC-Congress are making such remarks. We fought elections in two seats of Jammu on our own and we will win them both. Azad has sensed his defeat that is why he is blaming PDP for it,” Singh remarked, adding that it was Omar who did not waste any time to become a minister in BJP led NDA government in the centre.

He asked the chief minister Omar Abdullah to show any milestones he has achieved in last five and a half years of government. “We have not seen any planning models in last five and half years of this government. Now why they are always seen bashing Modi because they (NC-Congress) fear accountability from him. They know when Modi will become Prime Minister of the country, he will not spare the corrupt,” Singh added. (KNS)

APDP members to abstain from voting

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) Monday resolved not to engage with and not vote in the election process in Jammu and Kashmir. APDP appealed that other families of the disappeared and all persons who have suffered at the hands of the Indian State must not engage with the electoral process.

According to a statement it was felt that despite successive changes of government, whether in New Delhi, or in Jammu and Kashmir, there has been no change for the family members of the disappeared or for that matter for the people of Jammu and Kashmir as a whole, including victims/family members of human rights violations.

“The National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Indian National Congress have been in power at different points in Jammu and Kashmir between 1996 and the present. But, none of these Governments have taken any steps to resolve the issue of enforced disappearances,” the statement said, adding “Except for comments when in opposition, these parties, and the representatives have consistently worked towards the larger Indian State policy in Jammu and Kashmir and sought to protect the perpetrators for human rights violations.”

The statement said that no political party in their election manifesto has referred to the alarming issue of 8000 disappearances in Jammu and Kashmir. “While providing different and contradictory figures, all political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have admitted the reality of enforced disappearances. But, they have taken no action. Except making promises like setting up truth and reconciliation commission and empowering State Human Rights Commission nothing has been done by any of the parties.”

“The Indian State and its various representatives in Jammu and Kashmir have deliberately chosen to scuttle all processes of justice, and have ignored all demands made by victims of human rights violations, including APDP,” the APDP statement, said adding “Despite more than 8000 victims of enforced disappearances, 7000+ unknown, unmarked and mass graves, killings, torture, sexual assault and numerous other human rights violations, the Indian State has taken no action.”

In addition, India has not ratified the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance, not allowed the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances to visit India, and to date the crime of enforced disappearance is not recognized by India under its domestic laws. Alleged perpetrators of crimes of enforced disappearance [and other abuses] are not investigated or prosecuted.

“The Indian State has ensured absolute impunity as not a single armed forces personnel has been prosecuted for crimes committed in Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement said adding, “The perpetrators are protected and rewarded. The victims, and the crime, dismissed and ignored.”

Now Omar defends his father, hits out at Modi,

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hit back at Narendra Modi on Monday, saying that Kashmiri Pandits did not leave Kashmir during his father Farooq Abdullah’s regime, but in BJP rule.

“Kashmiri Pandits did not leave Kashmir during Farooq Abdullah’s government. They left Kashmir because of BJP and its partners,” he said.

Modi had earlier in the day said that Pandit community fled from thevalley due to Farooq Abdullah’s “misrule”.

“Due to communal politics of Abdullah family, Kashmiri Pandits were removed from their homes only due to their religion. Is this secularism? Just for the sake of politics, Dr. Abdullah’s family communalised J&K, which is a land of Sufism and harmony,” Modi had said.

“Modiji doesn’t have the courage to come to Kashmir. He wants to be the PM of the country but doesn’t have the courage to come to Kashmir,” Omar taunted, Omar

“I don’t think the people of Kashmir can have a place for Modi in their hearts,” he added.

Politics of Slogans

Tasavur Mushtaq

Recently when I travelled down the south to cover election campaigning of two major political parties in the fray, the environs at few places were reverberating with slogans. The difference was just who the audience was listening to.

While walking through the lanes of various villages where the leaders of these two parties were scheduled to address, I was lost in my childhood memories, when in old city, loud speakers of Masjid’s were abuzz with slogans ‘Khoone Shaheedan rang laaya, Jaago jaago subah huvi,’ and various others which eventually have been erased by the new ones. The slogans were given background effect by beating of drums from the roof tops.

Then in 2002, assembly elections were held, possibly the one where participation was more of people after two decade strife of militancy. There was paradigm shift and first time I heard slogans in favour of ‘pro-Indian’ parties. It took me time to comprehend as I still had imprints of those loudspeaker voices and beating of drums. In this case the beating of drum was replaced by full fledged background music. NC had fielded Omar Abdullah first time in state politics and the slogan was, ‘Praani grav maeshravav, Albani vote travav,’ (Forget the old grievances and vote for NC).

PDP was new entrant in politics, though later they formed government with symbol borrowed from Muslim United Front (MUF); pen and inkpot and chose green as their flag colour. This was possibly done to revive the old chords of people who were associated with ‘freedom movement’. The slogan in PDP rallies was, ‘PDP hai apni jamaat, yaad rakho qalam dawaat,” (PDP is our own party, remember to vote for it). Mufti Muhammad Sayeed extensively used ‘healing touch’ in his rallies and even after formation of government.

While I was recollecting all this, I have heard in family discussion that in prime time of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, the slogans echoing were, “Ale kaeri wangan kaeri, Bab kaeri lolo ( Whatever Bab, Sheikh Abdullah wish, he can do that). This was I guess the trust.

The summer uprisings shadowed the 2002 and millions of people who were on the roads were shouting, “kaun kare ga tarjumani, Syed Ali Shah Geelani”. The other one I remember was, ‘is paar be leinge azaadi, us paar bi leinge azaadi”. The scenes were such effective that many elderly people I heard whispering that ‘We are free from the Indian occupation’. What went wrong, we will discuss it some other day.

Now when this time the election campaigning is in full bloom, the people I guess are the same, only the slogans have changed. The PDP rallies were shouting, ‘Yeli yi Mufti, teli chaeli sakhti’ (Mufti will come, difficulties will go), waving same MUF’s symbol.

While NC rallies were reverberating with, ‘Jeet hamari Insha Allah, Dushman Haeri Insha Allah,’ (Victory is ours, enemy will lose), again a MUF’s slogan of late eighties. Didn’t we had a single party to carry legacy forward, but NC?

The times have changed, so have the slogans. But irony is what we are up to as a collective society. We are being fed like animals and made to dance on their tunes. Do we really mean what we shout or it is just momentarily to cheer up ‘leaders’. Slogans do make nations to stand in uniformity and not change as and when the wind changes. Do we really have one slogan which we can preserve throughout the generations? Can’t we give one slogan as a tribute to those who laid down their lives? Or else we continue to be tamed for the ‘larger good’ of our oppressors.

Act, Not React

It was part of idea cellular’s multi-crore ad campaign that irked people in Kashmir and made them react. The ad showed two women customers telling a bemused shopkeeper, on the banks of Dal Lake, that can his Pashmina shawl pass the ring test! The shopkeeper scratches his head while the catch line – No Ullu Banving (don’t make fool of us) plays in the background. Within no time Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reacted and said that the ad campaign is wrong and misleading. It encouraged Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) to send a legal notice to Idea cellular company, which is owned by Aditya Birla Group, and demand damages worth 400 crore rupees. The notice demanded immediate removal of this ad campaign and telecast an apology instead. KCCI feels that the campaign has adversely affected their trade. The losses which according to KCCI are recurring and cannot be quantified should be compensated by the idea cellular company.

The controversy has once again put spotlight on Kashmir’s ailing handicrafts industry which is struggling to shun ‘fake’ tag from its shoulders.

Every year, with the start of tourist season in Kashmir, the focus is on how fake handicrafts’ find their way into valley market and end up in visitor’s luggage.

Every year, before the start of tourist season, department of tourism vows to take strict measure to take care of such duplications that swarm the local market. But hardly anything happens on ground. One does not need to be a genius to figure out what is wrong with the handicrafts industry in Kashmir as lack of will to curb flow of fakes is slowly killing the once famed brand Pashmina.

Almost everybody knows where these fake Pashmina shawls come from and how they are transported into valley despite check posts in place at state borders. If idea cellular ad can make Omar Abdullah react so sharply then why can’t he genuinely take measures to put the house in order?

It won’t take much effort to rid Kashmiri handicraft industry of ‘fake’ tag that has got attached to its name since last few decades. Just small interventions at right places and corruption free vigilance will work wonders in restoring the brand Pashmina.

The introduction of Geographical Indication (GI) registry tagging has given some hope to the artisans as it will help buyers chose wisely.

But the process of using GI on a large scale is still in its infancy.

Till then we must accept that there are more fakes flooding the market then the genuine ones. And only after accepting the loopholes we can be in a position to manage them properly.

Hope the idea ad campaign and the controversy it created helps the handicrafts sector in a positive manner. And the people at the helm of affairs act rather than just react.

NC using separatist boycott call for its benefit: Mufti

unnamed KL Report

SRINAGAR

PDP patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Sunday alleged ruling National Conference of using election boycott call of separatists for its benefit during the recently held Lok Sabha elections in the South Kashmir.

“Boycott was selectively enforced in Islamabad Parliamentary constituency, giving credence to the apprehensions that NC wanted to use the call for its benefit as it had done in Srinagar in last elections,” Mufti said in a press Conference.

He added that this time the experiment of stone throwing was implemented in villages as well. “While we uphold the right to call for a boycott but I believe using violence to enforce it is where the government’s role becomes suspect,” Mufti said adding, “The ‘rigging by other means’ has now got a structure for execution and that is a worrying trend for the future of this place and I want to share my concern with you and all those who have a stake in democratic system that it has happened at the end of the NC Congress rule is neither new nor unexpected.”

He said the people of South Kashmir have defeated the “diabolical plan” of the NC to allow only the ruling coalition voters to exercise their franchise.

“Though they were able to employ stone throwing in areas where PDP is having a unilateral sway and prevent voting there, but in other areas which they thought were their strongholds, people have voted for our party in large numbers and results will establish that,” Mufti said. He added, “We thank them (people) for reposing their trust in us in spite of their party affiliations.”

“I am deeply worried that NC congress coalition has not learned any lessons and for securing victory in elections they are still practicing old tactics that have devastated this state for two and a half decades. In 1987 it was the same combination that pushed prominent veterans of democratic system who till then believed in the electoral democracy out of the system. This was recently stated by none other than Syed Salahuddin whose transformation from Mohammad Yousuf Shah a candidate in Assembly elections is a constant and painful reminder of how NC Congress combine could stake everything for power, Mufti said.

He added that a generation of well intentioned young people too was not just denied entry into electoral system but was even punished for having ventured to do that.

“We have very painstakingly tried to rebuild the confidence of the people in democratic option. You are aware how the youth are once again looking up to democratic competition as a way out of our problems. But their worries are mounting that NC could try to repeat the plan in Srinagar and Baramulla constituencies as well,” Mufti alleged.

He said that the massive effort that had gone into creating a new atmosphere of peace, reconciliation and resolution in and around J&K seems at the real risk of going waste due to the “violent machinations” of NC.

“The Election Commission of India (ECI) has a special responsibility towards J&K because of the electoral history of this place and impact of any misadventures on the state and entire region,” Mufti said adding, “unfortunately the (ECI) has so far not conveying an impression that they are even monitoring elections in J&K. There have been blatant violations of Model Code of Conduct which have been reported in media and should have been sou-motto taken not of by the ECI.”

“We complained but without even a response. Dr Farooq’s open threat to use bombs and bullets against us or use of official machinery and invoking of religion, all have gone unnoticed,” Mufti said.

Cautioning against what he called repetition of 1987, Mufti said, “I am through you cautioning against a repetition of 1987 for which we are still paying a heavy price.”

“The failure of their South Kashmir experiment has made the ruling dispensation even more frustrated. And in view of the fact that NC is making a desperate bid to retain Srinagar in the face of unprecedented anger against it we have apprehensions that they might try to cross even the red lines that were spared in their previous subversion of the system that included the 1952 elections that remains distinct for being the only one in which even a single ballot was not cast, Mufti said.

India Pakistan exchange heavy firing in Poonch along LoC

KL Report
