NC, Congress Wins LADHC Kargil polls

People of Kargil on Saturday again gave a hung verdict in the elections held to Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil with no party able to get clear majority while National Conference emerged the single largest party winning 10 out of 26 seats while Congress was positioned at the second place.

The election for which was held on August 27. All results were declared around midnight.

Out of 26 councilor seats for which results were declared today, National Conference emerged as a single largest party by winning ten seats. The Congress followed it with its candidates emerging victorious on eight seats. Independent candidates have managed to win five seats in the elections. Peoples Democratic Party managed to win two seats.

The BJP, which had claimed to sweep the elections, saved its skin in these elections by winning the Cha constituency seat with a margin of 30 votes.

The voting for 26 out of the total 30-member Kargil council was held on August 27.

Established in 2003, this is the fourth council to be elected in Kargil district. The LAHDC, Kargil, is a 30-member council and its term is five years. There are four seats for the candidates nominated by the state government, including two from the minority community and two women.

The last elections to the council were held on August 22, 2013, in which the verdict was hung, with both the NC and Congress, winning eight seats each. Both the parties had the support of three Independent councilors each, taking their number to 11. The rest of the Independents were neutral.
