BUDGAM

In a highly dramatic sequence of events, five people, including four militants, reached Ichhigam village in Budgam, and barged inside a security picket manning a temple and minority community. They thrashed policemen, who later revealed that they were beaten for not carrying guns. The gunmen later drove to a nearby J&K Bank’s branch, where they enquired from locals if the bank security was provided by private guards or policemen. On hearing the bank is guarded by private security men, they decided to leave, but their vehicle got stuck in a traffic jam. To onlookers shock, the suspected militants got down from their vehicle and cleared the traffic. They also fired a few shots in the air.

INDONESIA

International wushu player and Jammu resident Surya Bhanu Pratap Singh won a bronze medal in the ongoing Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia. He first registered a quarterfinal victory over his Philippines rival in the men’s 60-kg category but then lost the semifinal bout against Erfan Ahangarian of Iran after suffering an injury in his right leg.

MECCA

It takes a lifetime for every middle class family to save their earnings to perform Hajj. Every year a number of pilgrims die before they could perform the Hajj, but the ones who die after performing the Hajj are considered lucky.

Last week two Hajjis from Kashmir died after performing their Hajj in Mecca. They were identified as Ghulam Mohammad Dar, 67, from Cheerkot Kupwara and Saja Begum, 65, wife of Ali Mohd Lone of Hayhama, Bungam, Kupwara. The duo had complained of chest pain and then they fell unconscious in Mina area. But once they were shifted to hospital they were declared brought dead.

KARNAH

This Eid turned into mourning for a family in Cherkote in Vilgam, Kupwara where father, his minor son and another relative died and five others were critically injured in an accident. Bilal Ahmad who was driving the family in his car to a hospital had a head-on collision with a Sumo taxi in Tangdar market. Bilal and his minor son Sheeza died instantly. All others who were in the car have received serious injuries, including his wife Misbah, parents Ghulam Hassan, Rafiqa and brother Tanveer Ahmad.

DAL LAKE

Last week, Bollywood rapper Badshah was spotted taking a Shikara ride in Dal Lake. He was in Kashmir for the official launch of Radio Mirchi FM station, 98.3, in Srinagar. After the launch, Badshah suggested Kashmir’s ‘oppressed youth’ to utilise social media for change. Wearing a Kashmiri traditional fur cap Karakul, and a shawl around his shoulders, Badshah spoke at length about how music could be a medium to bring about a change in the society.

TANGHDAR

For last 14 years, a father Hakimuddin Kasana is wandering from pillar to post in search of his son Muhammad Ashraf, then 17, who went missing from a Darul Uloom in Gujarat in 2006. Frail and anxious Kasana, a resident of Handwara, has not given up and has been making all efforts to trace his son, though authorities both in Kashmir and Gujarat have closed the case.
