JLR Reschedules 2-Day Strike On Special Status

SRINAGAR: The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) has announced rescheduling of the two days strike against a possible tinkering o the special status to August 30 and 31, Mirwaiz announced on Twitter.

“As the Supreme Court of India is now hearing the case, challenging the state subject law of J&K, on 31st Aug as such the statewide protest hartal by JRL against this nefarious move will now be observed on 30th &31st Aug,” Mirwaiz wrote on twitter. “However protests by different segments of society will continue.”

Media reported that the apex court cause list suggests the case will be taken up for hearing after August 30, as there is no mention of the petitions in the regular list of the apex court till the end of this month. “However, he (a source) said it might be taken up in the supplementary list. The list is yet to be made public,” Kashmir newspaper Greater Kashmir reported.

The court is hearing the petition of a rightwing NGO seeking withdrawal of the special status under the Article 35A. In the last hearing, the 3-judge bench ruled it will decide on the future of the case in the next hearing. They indicated the case will go to the constitutional bench. The issue has already taken Jammu and Kashmir by storm. Though initially, the response would come from Srinagar, off late, sections within Jammu and Ladakh have started reacting to it. The law protects the rights of the state assembly in defining the state subjects and bestowing them the rights.

In a statement, the JRL said that the protest strike which they had announced on August 26 and 27, has now been rescheduled for August 30 and 31. The JRL said the petition is part of the camping to alter the status of Kashmir dispute and hit the demographic structure and identity of the state.
