SRINAGAR
Terming the life of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as an open book to be followed in letter and spirit by the Muslims and the people world over, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Friday said that all the problems faced by Muslims including the problems at social, political and religious level were due to Muslims distancing themselves from the teachings of Islam and Prophet (SAW).
While addressing a gathering at the shrine of great spiritual and Islamic personality, Hazrat Khawaja Bahaudin Naqshband (RA) on his annual Urs before Nimaz-e-Asr commonly known in Kashmir as Khawaja Digar, Mirwaiz paid rich tributes to the Islamic scholar. Terming him as an embodiment of knowledge and spiritual excellence, Mirwaiz said the Sufi saint was a great social reformer and had spread the word of Islam to his disciples in its true spirit.
Deploring the social ills surfacing in the society, Mirwaiz said on the land of Sufi saints; materialism, greed, selfishness, immorality and social problems in Kashmir have spread in a manner as has never happened in the past Kashmir’s 5000 year old history. In this context, he said dispersion of the message of Sufis and Saints would help in eradicating ills in the society to a large extent.
Expressing serious concern over the tearing apart of the fabric of society and violence against woman, Mirwaiz said that it was the religion of Islam which has empowered the women by giving her rights besides stressing upon the society to give dignity and protection to her.
Demanding stern punishment for the accused who are involved for throwing acid on a girl doing Law in a Law college in Srinagar, Mirwaiz said that such crimes were on a rise in Kashmir. He said exemplary punishment should be given to the culprits involved in the crime so that social ills are rooted out from the society. He said there was a need to start a social reform mission in the society, adding, every individual should play his part in such a mission so that a healthy society is carved out for future generations.
Referring to Kashmir, Mirwaiz said the “so called” elections and government formations can never be substitute to right to self determination. He further said that Hurriyat was committed to take the struggle for right to self determination to its logical conclusion, adding, Kashmir issue should be solved according to the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiri people.
The Hurriyat (M) chairman said that Kashmiris have not sacrificed their lives for elections or government formations. “Sacrifices were laid for the freedom struggle, adding, no question arises that Kashmiris would dislodge themselves from this sacred struggle for which they preferred to give their lives and property. Election drama was being held since 1947 in Kashmir and as such it has never changed the disputed status of Kashmir,” Mirwaiz claimed.
