A step towards self-sufficiency in vegetables; 1 lakh hybrid Onion seedlings being distributed

SRINAGAR: Agriculture Department today organized sale of vegetable seedlings (Onion Variety Liberty) at Kitchen Garden Nursery Lalmandi. The sale proceedings were kick started by Director Agriculture Kashmir, Syed Altaf Aijaz Andrabi. Approximately, one lakh hybrid onion seedlings are to be distributed among the vegetable growers. The sale witnessed huge rush of vegetable growers from Srinagar and adjacent areas. Pertinently, the seedlings are grown under controlled environmental conditions with complete hygiene and disease free atmosphere.

Interacting with the growers, Director Agriculture Kashmir said that department is committed to promote the Kitchen Garden Scheme and aims at providing quality vegetable seedlings to achieve self-sufficiency in vegetables. He said that the department is providing quality and healthy seedlings to growers and makes vegetable growing sector a remunerative venture, the spokesman said.

He said vegetable cultivation has a good potential of employment generation and the unemployed youth of the Valley can take it to new heights with the help of modern technology and suitable agro-climatic conditions for vegetable cultivation in the Valley.

Joint Director Extension, Choudhary Mohammad Iqbal, Seed Production Officer Manzoor Ahmad Shah, Incharge Kitchen Garden Scheme, Altaf Ahmad and other senior officers of the department were also present on the occasion.

Growers and Kitchen Gardeners appreciated the efforts of the department for timely distribution of Onion seedlings.
