SRINAGAR

After battling for five days in SKIMS, the injured SHO Inspector Arshid Khan was shifted to AIIMS for special treatment in an air ambulance but he succumbed during the transit. Khan was injured in a militant attack at bus stand Anantnag in which five CRPF personnel and a militant died on the spot and four cops survived injured. He was inducted into police services in 2002 and was presently posted as SHO Anantnag. He is survived by his aged parents, wife Neelofar, 5-year-old son Abuhan Khan, Danim, 2, and a brother. Emotional scenes were witnessed at his wreath-laying event.

JAMMU

Two videos of students went viral last week. One showed a number of students of a school in Bani (Kathua), mostly girls, crying inconsolably. Authorities claimed the incident was not explained by medical and psychological consultations and was abrupt. They allege it was just an incident of mass hysteria that attacked the school twice in three days. In another shot from Gujjar and Bakarwal Hostel in Doda, a teacher was shown beating around a dozen students for reporting 10 minutes late to their tuition classes. The teacher, Mohammad Yaseen Choudhary, was placed under suspension.

SUMBAL

At an accident-prone spot, a signboard emerged near Peer ki Gali on the Mughal Road reading ‘don’t use mobile phone while drinking’. The signboard became a major attraction for netizens who blamed the callous approach of the traffic department. Soon, an enquiry was ordered with the immediate effect and entrusted to DySP Rajouri-Poonch.

ACHABAL

At Bidoora Achabal, a militant and an army major were killed in an encounter. Next day, people were on roads in protest, carrying the body of a civilian Nasir Ahmad Mir, a first-year student. He was found just a kilometre away from the encounter site. The family alleges Nasir was with them in fields till late afternoon when he was sent by his family home to get tea but he did not return. Next morning, his bullet-ridden body, 3 bullets on the chest and one on hand, was found by villagers. After the protest, the district commissioner has ordered an enquiry to look into the incident. Last week, at least five government forces personnel were killed in different militancy-related incidents.

PAHALGAM

After setting up an example of an exemplary host by sacrificing his own life by saving five tourists, Rouf Ahmad Dar, a tourist guide became a hero and the department decided to hold a 3- days rafting event in his memory. Around 12 teams from state’s three divisions participated in the event. But it ended up in yet another mourning when a boat capsized, killing two more people, including a tourist Sanjna and a tourism department employee Rinku Raja from Jammu. Soon after the incident, the tourism department has suspended water rafting in Kashmir till a proper mechanism will be put in place.

SHOPIAN

In a bizarre incident, a video was hugely circulated on internet showing school kids weeping and terrified in their school bus of Rainbow International High School after the bus driver was beaten by the army in Zawoora (Shopian). The driver was injured in the incident. Soldiers belonged to Shadaab Karewa Camp Shopian. It was second such incident of the day. Earlier a traffic cop identified as Mudasir Ahmad, a resident of Balhama Srinagar, was beaten up by the Army’s 20 RR in Nowgam (Srinagar) for allowing a civilian vehicle pass close to an Army Casper. The cop sustained grievous injuries.

MUMBAI

In a heart-breaking incident for his lovers, a noted Kashmiri cricketer Rasik Salam Dar, who was included in India under-19 squad, was banned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for two years following the allegations of submission of faulty birth certificate. Salam was part of Mumbai Indians team in recently held Indian Premier League 2019 where he conceded 42 runs in his quota of four overs.

SRINAGAR

Last week, Kashmir’s all football lovers had a common address at Srinagar’s AstroTurf ground where an exhibition match was held under floodlights between Indian Stars XI and JK Stars XI that included former India players Bhaichung Bhutia, Renedy Singh and Mehrajuddin Wadoo. All four advisors to the Governor and Chief Secretary BVR Subramanyam inaugurated the event.
