Scores of people on Monday participated in the last rites of slain army Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani, who was killed during an encounter at Batagund village of Shopian on Sunday.
Reports said soon after the body of slain soldier reached his native village, scores of people gathered and participated in funeral prayers.
Earlier, the army had also paid tributes to late Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani, Sena Medal Bar (SM ).
An army spokesman in a statement said, “In a solemn ceremony at BB Cantt, Lt Gen AK Bhatt, Chinar Corps Commander and all ranks, paid homage to the soldier on behalf of a proud nation. In a show of solidarity, representatives from other security agencies also joined in to pay their last respects to the deceased.”
Late Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani (SM), sustained bullet injuries during a gunfight at Batagund village in Shopian district. He was provided immediate first aid and evacuated to 92 Base hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
“The Braveheart from Kulgam district of south Kashmir was a highly decorated soldier and had been twice awarded Sena medal for gallantry in August 2007 and in August 2018,” said army spokesman. “The slain Late Lance Naik Nazir Ahmed Wani (SM), was 38 years old and had joined the Army in 2004. He belonged to village Check Ashmuji of Kulgam tehsil, and is survived by his wife and two children,” he said.
“The mortal remains of the deceased were taken for last rites to his native place, where he would be laid to rest with full military honours. In this hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved family of the slain and remains committed to their dignity and well being,” the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, when the slain army man coffin landed in the camp of 29 RR base at Kulgam another wreath-laying event took place in which senior army and police officers including SSP Harmeet Singh Mehta paid tributes.
