MeT predicts wet weather from December 31, Srinagar records coldest night of season at minus 6.2

Minimum temperatures continued their free fall in the Kashmir Valley on Sunday due to clear overnight sky, a Met official said.

He said that they were expecting another spell of light snowfall and rains in plains and moderate snowfall in the upper reaches of Kashmir from December 31 to January 3.

He said the main snowfall activity would be on January 1 and the upper reaches in Ladakh would also receive light snowfall during the same period.

“This spell of snowfall will likely provide relief from cold wave in Kashmir and parts of Ladakh as night temperatures are dropping continuously,” he said.

Leh town of Ladakh region recorded the lowest minimum temperature at minus 19.0 degrees Celsius while Pahalgam at minus 10.4 was the coldest in the valley followed by Qazigund at minus 9.5.

The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.6 degree Celsius.

Srinagar recorded the lowest night temperature of the season so far as the minimum temperature recorded in the city was minus 6.2 degrees Celsius, an official of the Meteorological Department said.

Kupwara township of north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 6.1 degrees Celsius. Kokernag, in south Kashmir, recorded minus 7.5 degrees Celsius, he said.

In the Jammu region, Jammu city recorded 5.7 degrees Celsius, Katra recorded 3.3, Banihal recorded minus 2.2, Batote recorded 0.4 and Bhaderwah minus 0.8 as the night’s lowest temperatures.
