Kulgam residents protest in Srinagar, seek removal of army garrison

SRINAGAR

Residents of Redwani area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday held a protest demonstration in Srinagar against the Army camp established in the middle of their village.

The protesting people demanded the removal of the camp which according to them has turned their lives into “hell”. The protesting residents assembled here in press enclave and raised slogans against the Army and authorities for allowing the establishment of an army camp at Redwani village.

The village according to the residents is surrounded by two army camps within a radius of 3 kilometers. The protesters said that village having a population of more than ten thousand souls from nearly 1100 residential houses “is in total insecurity just because of the army camp”.

One of the protesters, Ghulam Mohammad Dar said that all the educational institutions are shut from last five days in the area because the students have to cross the army camp. He said, “We do not have light from last three days because army soldiers have damaged the transformers by firing bullets.”

Protesting residents alleged army personnel for damaging more than 60 houses and more than 20 vehicles during a night patrol. (PTK)
