Police seek explanation from AMU over revoked suspension of 2 Kashmiri students

Srinagar

Two weeks after the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) revoked the suspension of two Kashmiri students booked in sedition case, who were suspended on charges of trying to organize a condolence meeting on the AMU campus for slain scholar turned Hizb commander Manan Bashir Wani.

Police have now sought an explanation from the varsity over why the suspension of the duo was revoked. Before joining the militancy Manan Wani was pursuing Ph.D. in AMU. They have asked for a report on the university’s internal inquiry conducted by a three-member committee against the two students Waseem Ayoub Malik and Abdul Haseeb Mir, both are pursuing a Ph.D. in history and biochemistry,  Indian Express reported.

“We want to see what evidence and facts are mentioned in the inquiry report that led to the cancellation of suspension, “Indian Express quoted investigating officer and Civil Lines police SHO Vinod Kumar saying.

The police have also requested the authorities of the university to provide footage from the CCTV installed near the spot where students had assembled.  “The video has been sent to the forensic science laboratory in Agra,” Kumar told Indian Express.

“We are providing all possible help for the police investigation. We explained to them (students) that police are conducting the investigation and we cannot do anything,” the report quoted university registrar Abdul Hamid saying.

On October, 16, the varsity revoked the suspension and sedition charges against Kashmiri students and conveyed the report of a fact-finding team to the district administration so that they can take a call on quashing the FIR too. “We have always said and we reiterate that no student will be victimized by the administration,” AMU PRO Omar Peerzada said earlier.

Many silent protests were earlier also held outside the Kennedy Hall by the Kashmiri students in support of the duo. Students have also been regularly approaching the AMU authorities, demanding that the FIR be quashed.
