Srinagar
Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI) in association with Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) celebrated world snow day in Gulmarg on Sunday.
The spokesman said IISM under the ministry of tourism celebrates world snow day every year. This year approximately 90 children’s from Kashmir and many from other parts of the country participated in the celebration under IISM Gulmarg. Institute organized freeskiing training for all the participants. Many children were accompanied by their parents who were also given exposure to snow sports.
Mr J S Dhillon, director of IISM welcomed the children and parents and briefed them about the significance of world snow day. He said many children are interested to pursue snow sports but there is a huge gap in the knowledge on the various snow sports facilities available in the country. He said Gulmarg is a world-renowned snow sports destination but awareness amongst the children & environment is very low including the people from Kashmir itself.
He also explained the huge impact of global warming on the snow sports & requested all stakeholders to comply with the environment-friendly norms to save our snow areas. He said that Gulmarg used to have 10-15 feet of snow 3 decades back & now it is not even 3 feet of snow in Gulmarg due to global warming.
