DPS student bags state award for Thang Ta

Srinagar

A Dehli Public School, Srinagar student has bagged State Award on the Republic Day, 2018.

Sairah Zahoor, a 7th class student of Delhi Public School, Srinagar, received the award under Outstanding Sports Person category for her excellent performance in Thang Ta martial arts. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs 51,000, a medal and a citation.

Sairah has been a student of the school throughout her life, and she credits the school especially her coach at the school Unjuman for her success. She was interested in martial arts, and other sports like swimming right since her childhood. The school provided her the perfect opportunity to harness this interest, and immediately felt a sense of belonging, taking to the sport vigorously. At the tender age of ten, she participated in district competition under the expert guidance of Unjuman. Soon, she progressed to the state, national and international levels.

She won her first gold in her maiden national games held in Tamil Nadu in 2016 and repeated the feat the next year at the nationals at Hyderabad. It secured her a place in the Federation Camp, held in Agra, where she again put a stupendous effort bagging the gold. This guaranteed her a selection for the International Championship to be held in South Korea. She brought laurels to the country, state, and her school by winning the gold in International Thang Ta Martial Art Championship. The school is naturally chuffed at her success.

The Chairman Vijay Dhar claimed “Her success is a small validation of the dream that prompted us to start the school – give the talent in Kashmir a platform to shine and rise. Her success reflects the hard work put in by the school in honing her talent.”

The principal Murli also congratulated the young achiever, and expressed his “gratitude to the sports faculty for such path-breaking guidance.”
