Lieutenant General SK Sharma assumed the appointment of Chief of Staff, Northern Command at Udhampur on Monday, an army spokesman said.
He relieves Lieutenant General JS Nain who would be taking over a Corps shortly.
“Lieutenant General SK Sharma, was commissioned in the Rajputana Rifles on December 17, 1983, and has commanded 11th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, an Infantry Brigade along the Line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir and an Infantry Division in Jammu,” said army spokesman.
He has also held staff and instructional appointments including a Military Observer tenure at United Nations Mission in Liberia.
He has also served as an instructor at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and has had tenures in Military Operations and Intelligence Branches at Army Headquarters, the spokesman said.
“Prior to taking over as the Chief of Staff, Headquarter Northern Command, he was tenating the appointment of Chief of Staff, Chinar Corps. The General Officer is also a recipient of Yudh Seva Medal for his distinguished service during operations and dedication to the organization,” the army spokesman said.
