Srinagar

The students of the University of Kashmir on Monday staged massive protests inside the campus to protest against official’s decision to hold 13th J&K Science Congress (2018) on a day “when entire Kashmir is mourning killings in Shopian”.

Reports said students including hostellers have assembled outside the convocation complex, where the event is taking place, to protest against the said event and the civilian killings in Shopian.

An eyewitness told Kashmir Life over the phone that students are raising pro-freedom slogans outside the convocation complex, where Governor N N Vohra is present as chief guest.

“University authorities should not have held a seminar today when entire Kashmir is mourning deaths of civilians in Shopian,” said a protesting student wishing anonymity. “By holding a seminar University authorities want to show the world that Kashmir is normal, which is not true,” the student added.

According to reports, huge numbers of government forces were deployed inside the campus, to make the event a success. “They have turned our campus into a garrison,” a student told Kashmir Life over the phone.

Meanwhile, students offered funeral in absentia for the slain militants and civilians killed in Shopian on April 1, 2018.

Kashmir University on Sunday postponed all the exams scheduled on April 2, 2018. The fresh dates for the deferred examinations shall be notified separately, later, said a university spokesman.
